Premier shuts down reporter’s ‘personal questions’

Cindy Rosan of Guava Berry Media.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley ended a tense exchange with a reporter who questioned him about personal matters yesterday.

The Premier described the inquiries as “false” and stressed that they were inappropriate for discussion.

The confrontation arose during a press briefing when Guava Berry Media’s Cindy Rosan asked the Premier about medical service debts and concerns about school safety before moving to questions that appeared to surround his personal life.

There’s a lot going on in the ministries that report to you. Debts for lack of basic medical service, paedophiles in public schools not being sent home just to save face, and you being served court papers for lack of certain commitments,” Rosan alleged.

“I’m not quite sure what you’re talking about…” Premier Wheatley responded. “You spoke about these ministries that report to me. I’m not quite sure what you [mean]. Each ministry has a minister that’s been appointed with responsibility. Each ministry has ministers appointed to oversee issues in the territory.”

The Premier explained that all governments face challenges and said they are responsible for responding to them as effectively as possible. “The people of the territory will assess how well we do in responding to those challenges when the election comes,” the Premier added.

The dialogue became increasingly strained as Rosan pressed the Premier to answer her questions. “Well, we’re now heading to elections in another two and a half years. So, with what’s falling apart under your government, do you have anything to say? Debts for lack of medical service, paedophiles sitting at the school that can’t be sent home, you being served by government, by courts for lack of commitments. Like, this is your government that we’re talking about.”

“What you’re saying is false, and I’d appreciate if you don’t bring up any personal matters,” the Premier answered. “I’m not having a debate with you, and I’m not into a back-and-forth conversation with you at this particular point.”

He added: “I’ll just say very firmly, I don’t appreciate [you] bringing up any personal matters here when I’m here in my capacity as the Premier.”

Previous encounter

The heated exchange follows an incident involving the same reporter early last year, where she accused the Premier of unprofessional conduct. At the time, Rosan requested information about three government hires and asked Premier Wheatley to address allegations of inappropriate relations with at least two of them.

After responding to some of the questions, Premier Wheatley said Rosan’s question about the allegations was inappropriate and suggested the question was based on ‘reckless rumours’.

Premier Wheatley denied any misconduct allegations. Rosan alleged months ago that she was barred from entering a government-held press conference.

Cindy reports for the ONLY media house in the BVI that has reported on the Pedophile at the High School and you want to say she is not a reporter? I suggest you look at the others and ask them why they are not interested in defending our children? Where is their integrity? What sort of reporters are they?

I found all the reporters in the room were inept period! Coming to a press conference with poor questions, don’t get or demand a direct answer to the questions they do ask and don’t follow up and hold these folks accountable to what they actually say. Example here again Lorna promises discussions with the grocery store owners, same way she promised discussion with the bank leaders for better loans and customer service. Any changes to date? NO!! She also promised discussion with the insurance companies concerning high rates. Any changes to date NO!! So the reporter misses the opportunity to ask her where are the results from your promised discussions and why would this be any different? The real question is why pass minimum wage with a REAL consumer protection bill in place???

There is a time and place for everything and this was not the forum for her petty questions.

she cannot be taken seriously if she refuses to rise above the personal gambits of her arguments. Hit the Premier where it hurts and outline his ineffectiveness as a leader. His party’s ineptness in moving the country forward and the diabolical state that the country is now in, making it nearly on par with Haiti.

Ries above young lady, you will do a better service to the people of the country if you do.

I consider Ms. Rosan’s question to be in order.

The Premier’s personal life reflects on his public life.

if you are working in the public service guess what…. your life is now public to everyone.

why do you think we have regetier of interest availabe now for the public to see. once you are working for the public service the public must know about you and your business

how would like to know that their females in places of authority or working at the courts, police, cutsome etc are sleeping with known killers or dope pushers? working in the public service with access to your information or handling information that give criminals an advantage to commit crimes?

so yes your life and welfare shall be public for transparency and accountability

if the our country leader is indeed having inappropriate relations with his workers then that is an abuse of power and tbh that act is quite famous in the police force and cutoms/immigration

I am not a fan of the lady. I do stand with her on the concern at hand that she has raised and brought to the forefront about child molestation allegations going on in our public school system. I am also a parent and a past student, and I too stand against this evil. At Althea Scatliffe back in the 90s, there was a male teacher who thought I was his dolly that he could feel up once he could get me in an empty classroom. I stand to be corrected, but he went on in the school system up to probably last year. As a little girl, that man put the fear of God in me as to what would happen to me and my family if I ever said a word. I became more and more obedient to him because I didn’t want him kill off my family as he use to threatened.

I never said a word to anybody because who would believe me. I was class 3. I use to pray for this man to just get strike down by some kind of force and inside I felt bitter and angry.

It is like child molestation is part of the curriculum now.

Living a life of molestation by someone who a child should run to for protection is a nightmare and God help every child, boy and girl going through this by teacher, family, friend or stranger.

So yes Mrs Rosan, raise hell for that child. I hope the parents do not back down and that other children speak up. Its the only way these criminals will get exposed and brought to justice.
