Premier slams ‘hypocrites’ over road repairs

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has taken aim at what he described as “hypocrites” in the public who have been criticising temporary road repairs in the territory.

During last Friday’s sitting in the House of Assembly, Premier Wheatley defended the government’s approach to fixing the territory’s roads while addressing the backlash about the ongoing repairs.

The criticism comes as the government undertakes temporary road works to make the roads more drivable while preparing for larger-scale improvements. Premier Wheatley was quick to call out the critics, stating that many of those complaining about the roads had also voiced dissatisfaction with the repairs being carried out.

“There are some real hypocrites out there in the public complaining about how many holes in the road, all the potholes in the road,” Premier Wheatley stated. “As soon as the asphalting started to happen, they started to complain that it’s being done without proper drainage or proper engineering.”

The Premier explained that the current asphalting works are a temporary measure to keep the roads functional while the government implements more extensive repairs. He assured residents that these future works would address the underlying issues with proper engineering and drainage systems.

“The asphalting that’s taking place now is to keep the roads drivable while we are preparing to do the major works, which would include drainage, which would include the proper base for the roads,” he explained. Dr Wheatley emphasised that the government is taking a dual approach—conducting temporary repairs while laying the groundwork for long-term solutions.

Premier Wheatley highlighted the challenges the Ministry of Communications and Works faced in getting road projects off the ground, noting that the process had been delayed for over a year due to systemic obstacles. “About a year ago, we’ve been trying to get this done… the system has so many roadblocks to prevent you and stop you,” he added.

Premier Wheatley said Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer has been at the forefront of the road rehabilitation efforts and is receiving full support from the government. He commended Rymer’s hard work in pushing through the obstacles, acknowledging that while the system has been slow, significant progress is being made.

Premier Wheatley urged residents to recognise the efforts to address the issues and pointed out that some critics fail to acknowledge the work already completed and instead shift their focus to new problems. “Whenever something is being done by the government, what we conveniently do is we just ignore it and then just start focusing on another problem,” Wheatley commented while referring to this as a “political tactic.”

I am inclined to believe that if this was the intent,it would have been stated from the outset and immediately and/ or soon after the criticisms were launched. You would have been beating your chest and coming at your critiques with this now explanation, immediately.
I am also inclined to believe that now, long after the stinging criticism to which you are now addressing ,you are on a soap box boldface untruthing ma***uying and insulting our commonsense. I dare call you a L**R. Your predecessor’s identifying trait. Did you announce this blanketyblank before or after Church on your Sabbath Day yesterday, in time for Monday morning opening the start of the week?

Natalio, you have been in power for years.

We are not hypocrites, we are just tired of waiting for you to finally stop travelling, stop your nonsense attendance of conferences where nobody cares about our little islands.

We are tired of you not taking action.

You always mention how many things you are getting done, but when we question what you actually are getting done you start complaining.

You are a child in an adults job. You are an amateur and we need a professional. You are utterly inc***etent and cannot get anything done other than some silly parties that do not benefit anyone other than your friends organising it.

Your road works are inadequate, and the years planning should have finished by now. The money you wasted on other matters could have fixed (not patched, but FIXED) the roads years ago.
