Premiership, COI reforms took a toll on my health and family life

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley, the representative for the Seventh District, has revealed that his health and personal family relationships have been strained during the implementation of Commission of Inquiry (COI) reforms.

In a Facebook interview with JTV on Monday, October 14, Dr. Wheatley addressed concerns raised by a viewer about the perceived neglect of the Seventh District. He explained that a specific phase of the COI demanded a considerable amount of his time, leading him to work late hours alongside other legislators in the House of Assembly.

“We were faced with the hurricane, we were faced with the pandemic and we’re faced with the COI and all the instability since then,” the Premier stated. “It’s been a really heavy task, in some instances my health suffered.”

“My personal relationships with my family have suffered because I put so much into the job,” the Premier continued.

Dr Wheatley expressed that his commitment to his role has particularly affected his relationships with his children, as he has struggled to be present for them.

“It’s difficult being the son or daughter of the Premier. There’s a lot of things that come along with that so I’ve been making sure I make some time to have more conversations with my children,” he added.

He also mentioned that, after consulting with his physician, he was advised to manage his workload better, eat properly, and pace himself.

As the COI process winds down, Dr. Wheatley emphasised his intention to improve the sentiment within his district. The COI, initiated in January 2021, investigated allegations of corruption and abuse of office within the Virgin Islands government. The inquiry, led by Sir Gary Hickinbottom, resulted in recommendations for significant governance reforms, which the government has been working to implement in collaboration with the UK government while upholding democratic governance.

Why don’t you go for independence of the BVI? It should be a lot easier once the UK is no longer checking your account balances..
