Public Service 101 course for gov’t workers now territory-wide

As the government advances its plans to build a world-class public service, the Dr Natalio Wheatley administration has now rolled out and completed its Public Service 101 course for government workers across the territory’s four main islands.

In June of this year, the Virgin Islands Public Service Learning Institute (VIPSLI) reported that more than 1,400 public officers have received learning opportunities from the institute since 2024, representing approximately 50% of the public service.

Thirty-three public officers residing in Anegada recently completed the three-day course, marking its completion across the territory’s four main islands.

According to a press release by the Government of the Virgin Islands, this mandatory course for public officers provides detailed information about the government’s systems, framework, best practices, and other crucial information to help them achieve success.

“Hundreds of public officers across our four major islands have now experienced Public Service 101. This course presents a thrilling three-day learning experience that prompts attendees to consider not only the organization of the public service but also to reflect on their vision for their time in public service.”

George was officially appointed as the first Director of VIPSLI on June 18, 2024, following her position as Interim Director since the program’s launch in August 2023.

Meanwhile, the public officers who completed the course were informed about various topics such as “Public Service and You,” “Office Procedures in the Public Service,” “The National Sustainable Development Plan,” and received a presentation from the Department of Human Resources, among other topics.

The VIPSLI plays a pivotal role in training and developing all new and existing public officers, ensuring they possess the necessary skills and abilities to carry out their duties effectively.

VIPSLI has now hosted six Public Service 101 sessions, including one tailored to educators.
