Red carpet roll-out for inaugural Virgin Islands Icon Awards

Red carpets rolled out to fit the festive black-tie dress code, as guests arrived adorned in classically coloured gowns and suits for the inaugural Virgin Islands Icon Awards on July 1.

The event celebrated outstanding achievements across various fields in the Virgin Islands, bringing together notable figures and community members.

The award for Emerging Youth Talent was presented to Kyra James Douglas for her thriving non-profit organisation dedicated to preserving Virgin Islands culture. For over seven years, “Kickin It w/Kyra” has served as a beacon of cultural education and representation for the Virgin Islands.

Dr Robert Mathavious, OBE, was honoured with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the financial services sector in the BVI and his enduring legacies.

These awards were not decided by public vote but were determined by a panel of judges; said to the largest in Virgin Islands history.

Meanwhile, first-time legislator Stacy ‘Buddha’ Mather, founder of the Youth Empowerment Project (YEP) in 2003, sat on the panel of judges for the media-producers category.

The event featured 26 categories ranging from Sports Athletic Performance, won by Kyron McMaster, to Media Presenters, won by Floyd ‘Heritage’ Burnett-Penn and Cindy Rosan for their popular “Da Morning Braff Show.”
The show is well known for its thought-provoking content on the happenings in the BVI.

The event was hosted by Temulji Hughes, the Outreach Officer for the Financial Investigation Agency, also known for his passion for cultural advocacy.

The Virgin Islands Icon Awards were executively produced by Kareem-Nelson Hull, with sponsorship from the Office of the Premier and various businesses across the territory.

These people would praise other people as if they’re idols worshipping the ground they walk on but only praise God when they want something from Him and He comes through.
