Repairs underway at Windy Hill Road following severe rain damage

The collapsed section of Windy Hill Road.

The Ministry of Communication and Works has advanced repairs on the Windy Hill Road leading into Carrot Bay after heavy rains on Monday, November 11, caused significant damage.

A portion of the Lower Windy Hill Road collapsed, limiting traffic to a single lane.

The Ministry announced plans to construct a retaining wall to stabilize the roadway. However, Minister for Communication and Works Kye Rymer stated that additional rain has necessitated an expansion of the project’s scope.

“Initial designs were developed for the wall, but following the rains on Monday, we had to extend the scope,” Minister Rymer explained. The project is now expected to be completed by January 15, 2025.

District Representative Karl Dawson advised that the road remains closed until further notice due to ongoing construction, with regular updates to be provided to the public.

The heavy rainfall last week triggered severe flooding across the territory, causing widespread damage to public and private infrastructure. In Road Town and other areas on Tortola, floodwaters blocked roads, making navigation difficult. Communities like Cane Garden Bay reported flooding inside homes, exacerbating the challenges residents face.

The Ministry has urged motorists and residents to exercise caution and follow detour routes while repairs continue.

This is what happens when you put your district above the country as a whole and call yourself the Deputy Premier! We in the first district are pissed! We told our rep this would happen when he announced the Windy Hill road will close and all traffic should go through Sea Cows Bay, only to see and not hear from him that Sea Cows Bay also has major road works. Who is making these decisions that affect the motoring public and businesses in this disastrous way! The first district needs representation because right now all we have is a placeholder.

  6. Some thingnis drastically wrong. says:

When readers, all of them independently wrote similar comments regarding an issue, it is clear that the supposed problem is not the problem, but the minds tasked with the responsibility of fixing the problem.

    |Not to be funny or disrespectful to the following, but it is clear that Papa Ning and granny Inger need to be brought to replace the current dead beat inept check collectors and other collections of salary they are clearly not earning.

  7. Cruise tourists says:

were not happy today with their abbreviated island tours in taxi buses. The looks on their dusty faces as they crawled through the massive traffic congestion today in Sea Cows bay says they will never return to the 3rd world BVI.

  9. Eldread says:

Premiere Wheatley, I may see if I could fit this road in the budget, because I got to have funds for my non stop parties and Vybz Kartel and other future first class flights and hotel stay. I got to take care of this music world because I myself was a rapper.

  10. Secret says:

road between western Tortola and Road Town except its on private land. Maybe the Premier should make a deal with the owner to allow public use while the Windy Hill road is closed and the SCB road works are progressing.

  11. YES TO UK says:

Is there anyone in the government or who is looking after these roads repair has any kind of common sense?
Let me give you a little bit of common sense do the road repairs at night 10PM to 6AM its cooler you get more work done and no problem with traffic are all of you that stupid that you can’t figure that out. School children are been late for school, workers are been late for work and you guys can’t see that. You tear up roads walk away from them up to 4 months in the meantime people vehicles are being destroyed and you guys don’t give a shit. I saw two buses with tourist traveling east west of the road repairs in Sea Cows Bay I felt a shame because of the condition of the roads. You mean to tell me that at least one person in government can’t come up with the idea of doing the work at night. Traffic has been backed up for miles on Sir Francis Drake’s Highway, Ridge Road, Road Town and on some secondary roads across the island in the mornings. Kye M. Rhymer you know all of this and you can’t come with a plan

This reminds me, so much, of when Fraser put those traffic lights on the downtown roundabout!

  15. Get attention says:

Everyone need to get government attention. Drive in to RoadTown and just stop your cars in traffic and get out and walk. Shut down the capitol of BVI and be sure there are at least 2 ships in. Give the premier a parking lot party.

  16. Fraczar says:

D3 rep is to blame as this was a concessional token from Natalee to Mr. Whiskers for jumping ship!

Blame them (2) guys and Kye as he did as told! Not an iota of confidence I have in this lot of pirates ‍☠️

  17. Luke Walters says:

It’s great to see repairs underway at Windy Hill Road after the storm damage. The focus on drainage is key to preventing future issues. I’m also curious—how might materials like stucco, often used on exterior walls, hold up in flood-prone areas? Are there specific techniques or finishes that can help stucco withstand heavy rain or moisture?
