Residents urged to focus on Crown Lands bill

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley urged residents to focus on the Crown Lands Management Bill after it received its first reading in the House of Assembly (HOA) on May 2.

The Bill aims to bring transparency and community interest to the disposal and leasing of Crown lands. It also governs the administration, management, development and use of all Crown Lands.

The proposed legislation outlines criteria and processes for land allocation, focusing on sustainability, affordability, and responsible management. It also includes establishing a periodic Land Use Plan to guide future land development and mitigate adverse impacts of unsuitable development.

Premier Wheatley highlighted the balance between economic growth and environmental protection, reflecting on the government’s commitment to safeguarding natural resources for future generations.  “This is not merely a set of rules and regulations; it is a road map to sustainable development, social equity, and environmental stewardship,” Dr Wheatley stated.

Permanent Secretary Ronald Smith-Berkeley echoed the Premier’s call for public engagement, stressing the Bill’s importance for the territory’s development and prosperity. He encouraged residents to thoroughly review the Bill, which is available on the government’s website for public comment.

This legislative move responds to longstanding issues with Crown land distribution, including concerns about transparency and the equitable allocation of lands, particularly in areas like Anegada. The government said it aims to address these issues through clear policies and improved management frameworks, potentially involving independent bodies to oversee the process.

Residents are urged to provide feedback on the Bill to ensure it reflects the community’s needs and aspirations, fostering a more inclusive and sustainable future for the Virgin Islands.
