Road Town library rebuild unlikely before 2026
Plans to construct a new public library in Road Town may take until late 2026 to materialise, marking a decade since the closure of the original facility.
Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley confirmed that the Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) is managing the planning phase, with design completion expected by the end of 2025. He also revealed that the library is set to be rebuilt in the Station Avenue area.
However, construction is unlikely to begin before mid-2026 at the earliest. The original Road Town library on Flemming Street was shut down in early 2016 due to severe mould issues, and subsequent administrations have repeatedly stated that rebuilding the library remains a goal.
Former Premier Andrew Fahie had previously announced plans in 2020 for a “state-of-the-art” facility, but progress has been slow, with the project largely stuck in the design phase.
Budgetary constraints also derailed efforts in 2022, when plans to rebuild the library were dismissed due to insufficient funds. This has led many to question why the project is not treated as a priority, despite its importance to the community and its role in fostering literacy and education.
With no firm construction timeline, the wait for a new public library in Road Town continues to extend, leaving residents without access to a central library for years yet.
