RVIPF assists in multi-agency cocaine seizure

Not the actual drugs mentioned in the story.

The following is a statement from the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

The Royal Virgin Islands Police Force joined in a multi-agency operation to seize of approximately 1,700 kilograms of cocaine near Anegada over a week ago.

US Coast Guard, who led in the operation, responded to sightings of a go-fast vessel northeast of Anegda.

The RVIPF Intelligence Unit was immediately contacted and the Marine Unit was discharged for interceptive actions. When the Coast Guard Cutter closed in on the vessel, the smugglers proceeded to toss their cargo overboard.

Some 57 bales were recovered from the water and subsequently transported to San Juan by the Coast Guard.

The suspects and their go-fast boat escaped.

Following internal announcements by the Coast Guard, RVIPF was given authorization to release this information.

Commissioner of Police Mark Collins noted that relationships such as these help to disrupt the movement of narcotics and human trafficking in the region.

“We are happy to be a part of both the efforts of both Caribbean Border Interagency Group and the Caribbean Corridor Strike Force in detecting and intercepting traffickers, and do intend to continue to work closely with these partners,” he said.

The seized cocaine has an estimated wholesale value of approximately $51 million dollars.

Noticed it said the 57 bails were transported San Juan. This speak volumes. It says the BVI Authorities cannot be trusted to ensure the drugs do not go missing.

Very naive comment that. It’s actually to do with fact the BVI do not have a secure store that can hold that amount of cocaine. Didn’t bandits storm a police station once to get back their confiscated cocaine ?

  2. Interesting says:

Why did the police let the smugglers escape? Was their boat a submarine? This entire story seems suspicious. All these high tech expensive tools like helicopters, radar, go fast patrol boats, infared detection to operate at night and they still escaped. The only way to stop smuggling is to apprehend the smugglers not just their cargo!

Sir the objective is not to stop smuggling. If they really want to stop it they could. The drug dealers are spending money in the territory so they wouldn’t want to end that.

A chopper couldn’t track them. WTF

  7. Thinker says:

Good job to those involved. Perhaps, through the sophisticated equipment used, the authorities know exactly who the drug runners are. But they needed to get the drugs (evidence) to get it off the criminals and be used in a future trial. Perhaps also they followed the boat through surveillance to find out more about the shipment route, other parties involved, etc. This is a long-running war, not one skirmish.
