Scammers posing as Cancer Society representatives!

The BVI Cancer Society (BVICS) has issued a warning to the public about a scam involving individuals falsely claiming to represent the non-profit organisation.

In a media release on Friday, January 11, the BVICS reported receiving multiple complaints from community members about the fraudulent activities.

“These scammers are reportedly inviting individuals to Zoom calls or making false claims related to our Bingo fundraising events,” the organisation stated.

Expressing deep concern over the misuse of their name, the Cancer Society clarified its communication practices:

“The misuse of our name is deeply concerning, and we are committed to ensuring the public is informed and protected,” the statement read.

The BVICS emphasized that they do not conduct transactions or send invitations via WhatsApp. Instead, official communications are only shared through verified channels, including their website, Facebook platform, and trusted community partners.

The public is advised to avoid engaging with suspicious messages, contact the Society directly, and report any concerns to the Royal Virgin Islands Police Force (RVIPF).

This warning comes just weeks after the Virgin Islands government issued a similar alert in December 2024 about social engineering attacks targeting WhatsApp users.

The government described these attacks as manipulative techniques designed to trick individuals into sending funds, compromising their security, or revealing private information. Officials cautioned that cyber attackers often pose as familiar contacts or government officials, using fear and urgency to deceive victims.

The BVICS and local authorities urge residents to remain vigilant and verify the authenticity of any unsolicited messages or requests.
