Signboards of athletes to be erected along airport route

The territory’s main airport on Beef Island.

Premier and Minister for Tourism, Dr Natalio Wheatley, has announced plans to create signboards honouring local athletes who have represented the BVI on the international stage.

Dr Wheatley shared this initiative during a press conference on Monday, September 16, when asked about efforts to beautifying the roads leading from the Terrance B Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island, while also recognising athletes like Kyron McMaster, Adaejah Hodge, and D’Moi Hodge.

“As Tourism Minister, I have tasked my Junior Minister, Honourable Luce Hodge-Smith, in collaboration with the Airports Authority, to spearhead an effort for signage that celebrates our sports athletes and culture bearers,” the Premier stated.

He did not specify details on this initiative such as how soon these signs would be erected or how many.

McMaster, Adaejah, and Hodge have all made significant contributions to BVI sports, competing in numerous international competitions.

Notably, D’Moi Hodge was the first Virgin Islander to be drafted into the National Basketball Association (NBA). Meanwhile, McMaster and Adaejah have represented the BVI at various senior and junior championships, earning medals at prestigious events such as the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships, and the Carifta Games.

Most recently, McMaster, Adaejah and Rikkoi Brathwaite all competed at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

Let’s not forget that the BVI government spends approximately no money on enabling sports in the BVI.

Nowhere to run, nowhere to play. Just a dump all over.

Natalio celebrating sports is like Fahie celebrating a rehab clinic.

Why do we always overthink issues that should have simple solutions? Geeze, can’t we do anything effectively?

The most we can do is to have them on the media screens throughout the airport so that departing and arriving passengers can see their accomplishments. In other islands when you get off the plane heading to immigration until you pick up your luggage and exit they have photos of their atheletes or persons of national interest on monitors. Right now it is the atheletes, next few months it may be our culinary team.

In Jamaica for example, a 3D of Usain Bolt is an actual fixture in the airport.

Have them along the road for what reason. If youall want to do anything else, there is a billboard screen by the Beef Island bridge, just add them to what is there and keep it moving.

If things don’t cost a million dollars, we can’t do it.

Correction – if policitcians can’t find ways to distribute contracts to their friends and back to themselves, using our money, then we can’t have it.

Let’s not miss the true purpose here. Wherever the government’s approach defies our logic, consider this logic. These people aren’t as stupid as they claim to be. It’s time we start giving them credit for the criminality they are victimising the taxpayer with.

  10. BuzzBvi says:

If they lay the boards over the potholrs it would be money well spent.

  11. looking good says:

He wont have enough board to put up, he gonna run out of space..what happen to those athletes from before, only picking out a few… thats bias….

  12. Sailing says:

I’ll be watching patiently. Again, isn’t sailing a sport? Be careful about cherry picking. No mention of Thad Lettsome who achieved the highest ever result in BVI olympic sailing – 2nd place in his race four. Don’t let politics and ignorance spoil this initiative!!!

Do ont forget the LA Olympics team

  14. Norris Turnbull says:

Dont forget the LA Olympics track and sailing teams

  15. Fact Checker says:

What a misleading title… this was an idea from a reporter in the most recent press conference with the Premier and Deputy Premier. This was not an initiative that came from the Government, please stop lying to the people.

Also, putting posters up is all fine and pretty but if you do not have a system in place for the beautification of the Territory then are the posters meant to distract tourists and the people from the bush and poor road conditions?

    Smoking mirrors people.

  16. Swimming says:

And Elinah Phillip, she has the most Carifta medals of any BVI athlete in any sport, is a Carifta record holder, two time Olympian, youth Olympic semi finalist, commonwealth games and multiple time world championship athlete, university and conference record holder and much more. Just ask Dean the “Stats”man Greenaway he knows who all the athletes are!

  17. Better Idea says:

In addition, re-name a street in their names. Those who got the gold. That way for years to come, it will still be there and known as their street.
