Sister islands residents get their own homes via housing initiative

Wheatley

Three more residents will be getting their own homes under the government’s Housing Recovery Assistance Programme.

Last week, Minister for Health and Social Development, Vincent Wheatley signed contracts for the construction of three social homes on Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke.

Two of the homes will be built in North Sound, Virgin Gorda and the other in White Bay, Jost Van Dyke. The beneficiaries of the social homes are Gladyvet Walters of North Sound, Virgin Gorda, Sydney and Elmore Wheatley of North Sound Virgin Gorda and Lucien Callwood of White Bay, Jost Van Dyke.

Minister Wheatley said he was happy to see the resumption of social homes programme in the territory.

“They are much needed, particularly for Gladyet Walters who has been living in a temporary shelter for the last six years, I believe. I am happy to see she is getting her home started and young Sidney who lost his parents and he has not been home for a very long time, getting a place he could call his home,” Minister Wheatley said.

“I think since the hurricane, he (young Sidney) has been living on Tortola with friends and he is finally getting his home on Virgin Gorda to move back there. It is very pleasing to see a young person receiving the much-needed help. Hopefully, we can get more funding to create more social homes for other persons who may need help since the hurricane and so forth. I am very pleased we can sign this contract”.

K&C Construction was awarded the contract valued at $215,919.70 for Sydney Wheatley’s house in North Sound, while Construction and Engineering Systems (BVI) Limited was awarded the contract for Gladyvet Walters’ home valued at $225,701.75 and Lucien Callwood valued at $210,836.50.

The Housing Recovery Assistance Programme was initiated to assist homeowners who were either underinsured or had no insurance on their hurricane-affected properties before the September 2017 disasters. Since then, more than 20 homes have been built and more than 200 have been repaired under the programme.

  2. @ Don't mind he says:

You are 100% correct. He needs now to start looking at those people who still Home-less in the Sister Islands since after Hurricane Irma and are really in need of new Homes and repairs. People have had to relocate to find Homes which means some families have been divided. Representative please do something for those people then you can have the say. This time around please show that you really care for all the people in your District and not just a selected few. It is inhumane. We, the majority really didn’t want to see nor hear from you again.

  3. hmm says:
