Skelton: Reunited NDP could win 7 to 9 seats in next election

 Skelton

Opposition legislator Ronnie Skelton has suggested that a reunified National Democratic Party (NDP) could potentially secure as many as nine seats in the next general election.

Skelton based this projection on the combined number of votes received by the NDP and his Progressive Virgin Islands Movement (PVIM) in the 2023 general election.

“After the last general election, we started talking to each other, and we said, ‘this doesn’t make any sense.’ Based on the numbers, if we join them (PVIM and NDP), the possibility is there for us to form the government. We stand a better chance of winning seven seats or even eight to nine seats,” Skelton said during the NDP radio show.

The veteran legislator also noted that both parties recognized they risked remaining in the Opposition unless they united.

“The numbers clearly state that if we continue along that path… the possibility is there that we will sit in the Opposition,” he added.

The idea of reunifying the NDP and PVIM has gained traction among some members of the electorate, who see the merger as a way to form a stronger opposition bloc against the more consolidated Virgin Islands Party (VIP) government.

However, public support appears increasingly divided. A portion of voters has shifted attention to the newly formed Opposition Alliance, led by Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn.

Some observers regard Walwyn as a more formidable alternative to lead the territory through its current political and economic challenges while others have signalled a preference for a leader with stronger ancestral ties who can trace their Virgin Islands ancestry back three or more generations.

  1. Ohhh Yeahhh … Step into a Slim Jim says:

What is Skeletor and Smurf basing their assertion on? What is the NDP trying to achieve? In order to be successful it can’t only be to destroy Myron. Can they articulate that without Don Bishop directing them? Other than how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootssie Pop, the world wants to know.

    • And.... says:

If they had that revelation why didnt they …ACT ON IT ..instead of waiting years later??

      • @And says:

I think that is what they were aiming for firstly but then they were all on separate parties ballot and Lorna came over to VIP Then it boiled down to a unsuccessful no vote of confidence then Myron took Opposition leader so my friend years ago they couldn’t possibly act in it. I respect your views but it’s virtually impossible few years ago to act on it…..

  2. Eldread says:

You won the 2023 general election and lost it because you all didn’t realize that you had to come together to form the government, and two years after Ronnie and Marlon realized they have to come together? You just can’t make this comedy up.

What a bunch of entitled gentlemen. The three young men that form an alliance recognize that way ahead of you two .

As a very good businessman I think that Ronnie is making a lot of sense but is not in the realms of reality. After another four years people will be looking for fresh political blood and not these old hound dawgs that are infighting amongst each other.

  6. To Ronnie says:

Thats a simplistic way of looking at it. However, don’t discount the variables of which there are several.

  7. Undicided says:

For him to make such a statement based on the last election, this just tells me how his thinking is way off. Many variables have changed since the last election. He is much older and the voting public will be much younger, that is something for him to think about

  8. MR. ENTITLEMENT says:

He for sure will not be in the 7 or 9 seats. Ronnie suffers from a very serious case of ENTITLEMENT. what has Ronnie done since he was elected two years ago? The answer is nothing ! Yet he expects to be re-elected.

Ronnie seems to have this entitlement to being Premier of the BVi. But if you look at the election results the country does not share that view of him. He barely made it in during the last election. For someone who has been around the political scene for so long there is no way that newcomers like Mather and even Lorna should have beaten him. Sharie beat him twice in a row. Previously he would always come behind Dr. Smith and Myron when the NDP won. Ronnie needs to hang it up. He will be about 74 at the next election. Give others a chance. I for one will not be voting for him.

  15. Not my vote says:

Ronnie was the cause of Andrew being elected as Premier of the BVI. The NDP would have won the 2019 elections if he had shown more maturity and less entitlement. You ran for an election and you lost and rather than acting graciously you decide to form your own party but if he won he would have expected everyone to support him. That tells me all I need to know about him. He will not be getting my vote.

Boy the paid bloggers are out in force! I tell you this much, the silent majority if not on blogs. They home knitting and crocheting and tending to their gardens. When election time comes you all will learn what it means to be a Virgin Islander! No 1st generation or 0 generation happen to born here or even 2nd generation will run this country. We is we! All you 6th district bloggers will learn who we Virgin Islanders are. 70 is old? Well guess how old Lorna and Frazer are. We asking them to bench press 300 pounds? What in the world does age have to do with it? Are they mentally capable? Surround themselves with younger visionaries to blend with their much needed wisdom? This “too old” narrative is just dumb. They are all still mentally sharp and able. That’s what the position calls for. Skelton in better physical shape now than all of them. Lastly everything takes time. Rome was not built in one day. So what if it took growing pains for them to get to this point of re-unification? I guess you ask do things perfectly right the very first time in your personal lives! We all look back and say “had we known then what we know now”! But we want to crucify these men and women for what we now see as missteps? Ye without blame cast the first stone!

This wishy washy behaviour does not speak or look well for any of you being leaders in the territory.

And should they win it will just be VI business as usual. We need a change from these people. All of them, except may be for Stacy.

    • @BuzBvi says:

We need leaders who will listen, and with their historical knowledge of these Virgin Islands would fight tooth and nail to protect it and all its people.

  21. The more things change the more they remain the same says:

When the NDP came out first in 1999 they said they wanted to two terms just to help the country. Yea right! How many terms Ronnie seeking even after losing two times.
He was the main one calling Ralph old and saying that he need to go home. Now look who is Ralph.

The truth shall set us free peace be unto you

  24. Mr. Skelton says:

Thank you Ronnie for the small talk however take a page out of Mark Vanterpool’s book and know when to call it quits! It seems like you want to die in office or get rolled out of The House of Parliament on a stretcher. Maybe your gunning for the Guiness Book of World Records as the oldest Parliamentarian to serve in The BVI HOA. Go Home Ronnie!!!!!

  25. I say says:

And I am not afraid to say it loud. I prefer experience over youth any day. Right now we got lots of young politicians. They are all young except for the two, one Deputy Premier and the other a junior minister. Where are we? Are we moving forward? The traffic is jacked up. Disaster Preparedness building that we have spent so many millions on is stagnated and the beat goes on. The perfect Government is a mix of the experienced and with our young, brightest and best people understudying them. The recipe we have now has too many issues in the soup. Many seem to think if I think I can do it, and I am young, know how or not, then I run and I win, I will do it perfectly. Well, blind men can see that is not the case. It is not working. We can see it is not.
