Sometimes I greet people and see disgust on their faces — Premier

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley

Recalling instances where he was met with disgust and contempt from some members of the public, Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley has expressed a desire to see love and unity restored in the East End community.

The Seventh District Representative made these remarks during the opening ceremony of the Ileta “Bibi” Stoutt Cultureville at the Greenland field in East End on August 6.

“Sometimes I walk around to people, I give them a nice smile, I shake their hands, and I can see the disgust on their face. I can see something stuck in their craw. I just say to myself, ‘God bless you,'” he shared.

He lamented that the community has “lost that unity and togetherness” it once had, emphasising that disagreements should not make people enemies.

“What we are lacking is unity. When we disagree, everybody has to know we disagree, and sometimes, we fail to support each other. If we disagree, we disagree, but we can still be friends,” he added. “Let us bring back that spirit of unity. Let’s bring back that spirit of love.”

Dr Wheatley further reflected on the times when the BVI was rich in history and culture, urging the community to revive these values.

“We had an opportunity with this event today to bring back everything that made our celebrations what they used to be, celebrating our heroes and our leaders who brought us to where we are today,” he expressed during his speech.

The event at which he spoke was held as part of the 70th annual emancipation festival.

The thing is who out there actually feel like the premier/ finance minister is doing a good job? All you hearing is we still working on this we still trying to finalize that but nothing actually happening. When you listen carefully it want to seem like the reason nothing happening is because it don’t have money. So then you got to wonder if it don’t have money then how we still got money to waste on party and renewing leases for our high rent office spaces and cash to give foreign governments for hurricane relief etc while the people of the BVI get nothing but excuses.

But he raised it and in a manner suggesting that he is completely oblivious to the plight of the country under his watch with corruption and ineptitude competing for which will prevail. You can’t expect people who are also human to just accept and ignore his statement and naivete or worse, wilfull blindness. Wah yuh buy yuh wear.

When you all stop disrespecting people then things may change. You all want to treat people how you want and then expect them to smile with you all. That’s hypocritical!

  14. Strups says:

Dude, get over yourself. We are disgusted with YOU! You need to start looking out for the people, then maybe we might not greet you with such disgust.

I don’t know why this is news!

    REALLY?

ALL, are preety much entitled, to their own opinions, and attitudes,

UNLESS, of course, you’re looking for a
“paid”, “clown show”, where smiles and it’s nuances, are determined by those in charge!

  18. Slowande? says:

Why is this a guy playing slow and dumb? He full well know why those ppl face are in disgust when he comes up to them. They’re upset and tired of your incompetence as a leader, they are fed up with not having water to get ready to come to the even and fed up of the roads they took to come there. And to know he is the representative for that district and nothing seems to be getting done after all these years.

  19. plz showande says:

You had your hands full with the COI. I greet you well every time dont let it affect you.

My main disappointment is that you championed then forgot about the cannabis bill.

Nothing ‘finished’ seems to be happening at all & government offices are lacking basic equipment of which the responsibility falls also on the other ministers.

  20. What does he know? says:

There’s no understanding of the plight of the common people. All the pols are living high. Good salaries and benefits not to mention the greed bill. So what do they know about having to pay rent, transportation, food, water, cable phone from a $ 2K a month job? All they see is his lordship flying here and there without any improvements at home other than the offer of a pricey party on the taxpayers dime. As you sow, so shall you reap….

  21. In Life says:

as in planting, we reap what sow. If we sow selfishness and greed we will sow the both.

Sadly, that is the level of your administration. Therefore, it should be disbanded, but not by UK’s terms, but by our the people’s terms.

The mind set, policies and actions of the administration from the beginning has manifested itself on the peoples mind and is expressed through their faces.

No one should talk about enriching themselves if elected and raiding the treasury because those before them did the same thing.

That was the stated goal of party leaders. And now, karma is visiting

Meanwhile, while we were talking about corrupt elected robbing the kity jar to enrich themselves, they were told to”shur up.”

The policies the state of mind and their mental and tangible effects on the populace is negligible, while all of the expensive suits men are living high and filling their bank accounts.

We must do better than this. This cloud must pass and a new political party must be elected that will bring hcanges that are woefully needed.

  22. Your speech writer says:

Obviously doesn’t like you either , just set you up to get knocked down with that self pitying drivel.

  23. Gatekeeper says:

Dr. Hon Premier Natalio Wheatley, unity is a vital state but it does not occur by itself; it is not self-executing. It requires strong, instructive, effective, exemplary, etc leadership. Virgin Islands voters elected other members ( Westminster system quirk) who in turn voted you in as the national leader. And you are expected to lead and manage( leadership and management are halves of the same coin; they go together; cannot have one and not the other for success) from the front and strong. As the leader, you must leader and others will follow but they will not you off cliff. An old saying says if one look back and there is no behind one, one is not leading.
All talk and no action is not going to bring unity. However, strong, effective leadership can.

The 7th District should be the model, prototype district among the the 9 district. It should be the envy of other district. It was first in freedom , most populous district, the national leader represents the 7th, etc. Nuff said.

    • @GateKeeper says:

@GateKeeper, if the Premier were paying attention reading between the lines and listening,he should appreciate and act on the free m, priceless advice. But he will not. He seems to be in the camp which believes that control, power, giving flowery language speeches/comments, having an alphabet soup of letters before one’s name or after one’s name, etc makes one an effective leaders. It does not. A wise, experienced management science guru notes, “ if one looks back and no one is following, one is not leading. Premier get with the programme, for continuing with the same approach is a recipe for being a one termer. There is time for course correction.

  24. Premier says:

Things you say reaches the streets. Now you know. You have no secret place. Keep talking

  25. Advice says:

Things to do to work on your reception by the public.
    1. Fix the roads East End. 2. Work on the water supply 3. Create a Small and Medium Entrepreneurial Agency to assist people who want to start a business with a 3-6 months period where they don’t have to repay a loan at no more that 1% interest. That’s a start. Mr. Premier.
