Stop manufacturing untruthful stories about others — Walwyn

Myron Walwyn.

Amid the possibility that a scandal which implicates him might be brought before the Commission of Inquiry (COI), former legislator Myron Walwyn has called for the society to unite and address emotional weaknesses preventing its progress.

The former Education Minister under the previous NDP administration is at the centre of a scandal involving the controversial Elmore Stoutt High School perimeter wall project.

Walwyn, who has always maintained his innocence in the matter, took to Facebook on Sunday to questioned why Virgin Islanders “manufacture untruthful stories about each other and then sell them around like the gospel”.

He also said the BVI will not achieve its full potential until it addresses this and other emotional weaknesses that plague the society.

“Just about everyday, I think about our country and what an example we could be on this side of the globe if we worked diligently together towards it. The only way that we could achieve this is if all the people of the Virgin Islands (and I mean all) work in unison. There is too much tearing down of each other in the community. Why is it so hard for us to celebrate the achievements of each other? Why do we wish each other well until the other actually starts to do well?” Walwyn questioned.

He added: “Why do we manufacture untruthful stories about each other and then sell them around like the gospel? Why do we do these things? A country cannot move ahead faster than its people. If we don’t find a way to address these emotional weaknesses and each of us show our contempt for them, we will not reach the heights that we have the ability collectively to attain.”

Politicians called this on ourselves in many ways

Since the announcement of the COI, this is not the first time Walwyn has called for Virgin Islanders to refrain from speaking negatively about each other.

Recently, he said politicians are partly to be blamed for the damage done to the BVI’s reputation because they have a habit of calling each other ‘corrupt’ without having evidence.

“I am deeply saddened by the damage being done to the reputation of our home. In many ways, we have called this upon ourselves. If we call ourselves corrupt, without evidence to support our assertions in the name of parochial politics, people will begin to believe that we truly are. In many respects, we know the things that we are promulgating are not true and in other instances, we are reckless as to whether what we say is true or false,” Walwyn said in a previous Facebook post.

The local media has become the BVI version of FOX NEWS, all about getting a reaction. It’s a shame that in 2021 if you want real indepth reporting you have to wait weekly to get a copy of the BEACON. When you read their versions of some of the online stories it’s shocking at the details which are found there, but nowhere near the online news. It’s shameful to see what so called media/journalism has become in the BVI. Everything is click bait and stirring up drama.

That wall conspiracies is pure nonsense stirred up by Andrew that will now expose Andrew own dirt. When you digging one grave better dig 2! The appraisers already did a valuation on the wall and it came to some $900 thousand. Anybody who knows construction knows that the wall costs about that. But the media eat up all the BS that Fahie was spewing as opposition and still continuing with the foolish rhetoric till now. Bout wall. Stupes. Worry about your security … on every Board and so much more!

BVI news I think that is an unfair classification of Myron’s facebook post. And btw, are we getting news from people’s private Facebook postings now? I have to be careful. I had nothing to do with politics. It was a good motivational post calling on all of us to live together in unity. He questioned why we do certain things we do and then encouraged us to be better. And what I like is that he didn’t exclude himself. He said us. I know we like to have new topics to blog on but it’s not everything I believe is newsworthy.

  8. Stop the division says:

His post is not political however this division that’s in the country “who from here and who is not”is the downfall of d bvi..every issue that they face stems from that animosity towards outsiders that’s imbeded in their genes

Once they can start to c things differently, then and only then would d bvi b on the road to some sort of recovery

Cause it’s really my belief that it’s that mindset that kills everything in the bvi..why nothing cant work

Let me give a brief example..imo
Look at d bvi police force..the majority of the force is made up of foreigners..now d force cant effectively uphold laws because of the hatred for outsiders..no respect for d officers cause the majority of them not “from here”.
So at the end of d day d officers just trying to survive in the system as well..and therefore not in a position to uphold the laws as they should

So this division really needs to stop for the bvi to move forward

I don’t think this is what Myron was saying from reading his post. These new people should not be going on people’s facebook page and writing their thoughts like this without permission or something. The headlines are also misleading. He was asking a series of questions not making statements at that time.

You think people stupid? When you were in power you were the most cliquish minister and you built up a platform of enemies who ejected you from power. Divide and rule was your game and you divided yourself out of power. The day you return will be a sorry day for the BVI. We can read through you Myron. You are a power mad m*****maniac: a n*******st.

These new sites comments are the biggest spreaders of false information, slander and mischief. Some of these sites feel that because they blur a few letters that makes it ok to publish slanderous comments. Most of the negative information that I’m aware of comes from these sites. I don’t hear anybody out spreading these falsehoods publicly. These voices are strongest hiding behind these computer screens where they feel safe from taking responsibility for their words.

  25. Not Buying It says:

Not I. All of a sudden there are calls for unity from the left, right, and center from our past and present leaders. ‘Let us unite as a people, let us support each other, let us move forward, let us rally behind our Premier.’ All because they are seeking support from the people using colonialism as a scare tactic to influence and coerce the people. They want us to display a united front in the face of the ongoing present Commission of Inquiry. I am not rallying behind any of you. Let the UK take over. It’s about time past and present government representatives be held accountable for their blatant disregard of the electorate and misuse of public funds.

    • Vip is for disunity says:

Truth to be told the NDP has been calling for unity. I believe it was part of their csmpaigm slogan. The vip has been very divisive. They have been calling some indigenous and other who are born here island people. Vincent wanted to flush out people from other islands. They locked out people on work permit and exemptions during the lock down. They told people who were here for years to go back home as soon as the pandemic hit. The vIp has been the party of disunity. Now because they fraid the jail they calling for unity. I don’t want nothing to do with this government. That are the worst ever.

The VIP supporters are just like the republican supporters in America. Same mentality.

  28. Sam says:

The BWeeI have lots of simpletons which makes understanding their thought process very simple. They see success as a disease rather something they aspire to. Jealousy is another part of the people mindset.

Keep doing your musings Myron. They are a source of inspiration to me. Always something positive and uplifting. That is who you are. I voted for you and I would do it again. I heard people saying that no one came to help people and the country after the hurricane and it burn me when they say it because it is a lie.
You were all over helping people. It was because of you that I was able to seal back up my home days after the hurricane and I know that you helped many of my neighbors as well. Schools were open in a real fast time so that the kids could get back on track with their education. Look at all the schools that got rebuild and repaired under you after the hurricane. People in this little BVI lie too much for true. It’s sickening
