Teachers at ESHS junior campus reportedly stage sickout

Junior ESHS students at their Road Town campus.

BVI News has been informed that teachers at the Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) junior campus in Road Town have staged a sickout.

The protest reportedly involves several educators at the educational facility.

It is not yet clear what specifically is being protested but BVI News understands there is a myriad of issues for which the teachers are aggrieved.

The sickout is said to have affected regular scheduled classes but the extent of the impact is unclear. Unconfirmed reports are that some junior students who turned up for classes this morning have since left.

Our news centre will provide more on this developing story as information becomes available.

In the meantime, this reported sickout has come at a time when ESHS’s Pasea campus for senior students is also being plagued with issues.

Because of a major air-quality problem at the senior school, classes have returned online so the school can be cleaned of mould that has infested the building.

The senior school closed today and will remain this way for the next few days.

Yes teachers. Things change when you move together. Keep up the pressure or the powers will never listen. You are stronger in numbers. Whatever change you want, once you start going through the chain of command all the time and not getting anywhere, you take a stand of unity. Don’t let nobody bribe any of you with a trophy and a dinner now. The officials are slick

Hopefully they are out because the kids don’t wear their masks & the teachers don’t want to get sick with COVID.

So was it Sowande who told the teachers not to receive the students today? The teachers chose not to work today b/c of inflation OR b/c of COI OR b/c they are upset at the Government? Here I am doing my part for the society and working today despite all of that. The teachers made school a political platform. That’s disgusting. I can’t support that action even if I support them.

They are afraid of teachers who are knowledgeable and they have one aught against them . They are not from here .

  10. Education Priorities, Lost. says:

Education Priorities hoped for since forever.

It is vividly clear that education has fallen of the critical priority sense of our elected leaders, replaced with misplaced priorities. sadly, the negative effects of this will be experienced for decades on all levels of our society.

Here is where every current and future elected leader thinking should be.

We should encourage leaders to emerge from the spectator living room, who will not confuse public office with sources of making personal wealth.

Not suggesting that they are, but all know it exist. Hence, corrupt people do not make good leaders.

This country must spend a lot of its resources on education. Sadly today, the territory is experiencing millions of dollars going into questionable projects, while education is being neglected and is falling further behind. A price we will pay dearly for into the future.

The sad irony to this is that all of the current elected officials are highly educated.

Meanwhile, we do educate all children, so that they can get out of poverty. Poverty does not breed confidence. Only confident people can bring changes.

Poor, uneducated people can also bring change, but it will be hijacked by the educated and the wealthy…

Therefore, we should be steadfastly focused on giving young VIslanders a good education, while teaching them, at home, school and in the community, the value of hard work and sacrifice, while discouraging them from crimes which are destroying our image as a good people.

A lifelong educator, now retired, none of those notions appear not to be in the political calculations of the day.

Indeed, it is believed that if education was receiving the right focus and commitment needed, the spectacle being witnessed on campuses would not be.

  11. Not political says:

Sorry it had to be under this Honourable Minister’s watch but this has been long time coming. Honourable Wheatley is not a Minister who make the education system political, he is trying to make the broken system he met work. That 12th Form should never been added.

    • Nonsense says:

Ask those that did the 12th form how they benefitted before you talk f**k. The hatred for Myron and NDP continues even in the face of blatant incompetence and disaster with this Minister and his party. The VIP are an abject failure, point blank!!!!
