Two new dogs added to revived Customs K9 Unit

Two new K9s have been added to His Majesty’s Customs as the department announced the rebirth of its K9 Unit recently.

The announcement was made on September 11 at a graduation ceremony to honour three K9 handlers for their dedication and success — Olympia Maduro-Fahie, B’Jorn Caleb, and Shavique Barzey.

The handlers and K9s underwent a rigorous three-week training programme conducted by Instructor Keron Pole of Pure Dogs K9 Services. The training encompassed both theoretical and practical elements, with a focus on essential skills such as narcotics detection and bite apprehension.

According to the Acting Commissioner Greg Romney, the new K9s will enhance or add to the department’s operations.

“The introduction of two new K9s, Ace and Duece, coupled with the recertification of the seasoned K9 Gunner, represents a substantial enhancement of the unit’s operational capabilities. With these advancements, all K9s are now impeccably trained and fully prepared to bolster the effectiveness of Customs operations,” Romney stated.

Financial Secretary Jeremiah Frett also stated that the addition of the new K9s will significantly enhance the department’s ability to protect the territory’s borders and assist greatly in keeping it safe.

“These highly trained K9 officers are specifically bred and trained to detect contraband, narcotics, and explosives, and will assist in human apprehension. With their keen sense of smell, these dogs can detect substances that are nearly impossible for humans to identify,” Frett added.

He thanked Pure Dogz for their dedication and praised their hard work, noting that their expertise ensures that the K-9 Unit is ready to serve and protect.
