Two-way traffic returns to a section of Main Street starting June 1

Rymer.

Drivers will experience a major traffic change starting June 1 as a section of Main Street is converted into a two-way road, Minister for Communications and Works Kye Rymer has announced.

The change affects the stretch from Joe’s Hill and the Main Street cemetery junction to the Creque Building on Fleming Street. According to Rymer, the decision to reintroduce two-way traffic in that area is aimed at reducing congestion and improving emergency access in and out of the capital.

He said the change follows observations of a bottleneck near the old Flow building that has slowed down drivers heading toward the fire station.

The new two-way system is expected to provide a much-needed alternate route for traffic moving through Road Town and to nearby communities like Long Bush, Huntums Ghut and Joe’s Hill.

“This is basically to get the traffic out, emergency situations, and get that flow,” Rymer explained.

To support the change, shuttle services will be offered to help shoppers and employees access businesses located along the affected route. The public is being encouraged to park at the Road Town Festival Grounds or other suitable locations nearby and use the shuttle service for convenience.

“For those persons that would need to traverse the businesses there, we will organise with the shuttle service,” Rymer said. “The shuttle service would be making that loop and taking persons to their jobs, do their shopping, and wherever else in that area.”

The minister added that new signage would be installed ahead of the transition and police officers would assist with directing traffic during the changeover.

This move comes amid broader efforts to improve infrastructure and traffic flow in the territory. Rymer noted that the population of registered vehicles has grown significantly, contributing to traffic pressures.

“In 2020, we had 17,000-plus vehicles licensed. In 2024, at the end of 2024, we are short of 20,000,” he noted.

The Ministry of Communications and Works is encouraging drivers to take note of the new traffic pattern, follow all posted signs, and use caution during the adjustment period.

When I heard about the two way traffic the first thing i thought of was no sidewalk also.

    • STOP VEHICLES FROM PARKING ON THE LEFT BEFORE TURNING TO GO HORSE PATH says:

There was a pickup this evening by the house with the small boulders in the yard on the left after passing The New View Inn just before you turn to go up Horse Path that was blocking the traffic from flowing and this guy just outside chatting to the people on the porch while his pick up there idling.

Something needs to be done about that area with vehicles blocking the flow of traffic.

Make a video and share it, because you all making all these sporadic changes. Also, I am a visual learner, like many others. Please erect the appropriate road signs, all over the island for that matter! There are tourists making crazy turns and familiar people who are about to return to the territory, from school, for festival and such, and will be on autopilot.

If this experimental change does not work, REMOVE IT! Listen to the people for a once.

One road project completed. Take a road that is already there and declare it open. Well done.

Now try and get the 2 guys at Northam back to work using the Governments equipement and we can get Hodges road finished for under $2 Million. You get to share out the other $4Million.

Then. Not sure if you have a car but if not see if a friend can take you for a drive along the ridge road. I just saw in a picture both the Gov and P487 have a nice car each? Are they friends?

Kye don’t mind the noise the traffic flow is better now. It’s only for a few moments in the afternoon that the congestion is bad and it was worse before. It’s better flowing this way.

Making that section a two-way flow is good should have been done from the start but I hope it doesn’t create a bottleneck unless the drive coming from Josehill or East Street will be getting on the inner lane on the nightside.

As someone who travels this road every day, I see this backing up the traffic coming from the Joes hill. Because now not only will we have to wait for the cars coming from the band stand to clear the way, but we’ll also have to wait for cars coming from Spanish town to let us out. And it takes away parking on that piece of road that we already don’t have enough of. The only benefit to it is not having to turn around at Creques if you want to make your way to Joes hill. Is this a permanent change or a trial run? Has it been tested any????

In addition, to ease the traffic on the roundabout, the police need to be out in the late afternoon to remove the buses going to the East which stop right outside the Georges and J&C Dept store to pick up passengers; most of them waiting there for a while. One comes to mind Big B taxi bus.
