Use the bus stop to prevent traffic disruptions, residents told

The Director of the Taxi & Livery Commission, Jevaughn Parsons, has urged commuters using public transportation to utilise the newly installed bus stop at Market Square to prevent traffic disruptions.

In an interview with the Government Information Services (GIS), Parsons revealed that taxi operators approached the Commission to re-establish the community bus service, which has been without a designated bus stop since 2017. A few years later, the bus stop was revamped and installed. Market Square was selected as the location due to its central position and high pedestrian traffic.

“Ideally, we are trying to alleviate congestion on the Walter James Francis Highway,” Parsons explained. “Buses would stop there abruptly at times, causing traffic disruptions,” he added, while alluding to roadside passengers who don’t use the bus stop.

Constructed by the Ministry of Works in 2023, the bus stop serves as the main hub for passenger collection, addressing the dangerous practice of bus operators picking up passengers at the beginning of the Sir Walter Francis dual carriageway.

The new bus shelter is 36 feet long and is designed to accommodate over 30 individuals, providing a safe and sheltered area for passengers.

If the buses don’t stop on the highway, persons won’t stand there. The drivers must do their part as well to adhere to the protocols.

Exactly! The people going where the busses stopping. Simple. Fine the bus drivers that park by the post office and also the ones that stop for people by J and C and the round about. Until this is stopped.

    POOR FELLOW

  3. @ says:

Drivers definitely need to do their part. They shouldn’t be stopping any and everywhere period. Also, police need to patrol more to discourage people from catching rides anywhere they feel like.

In Grenada the bus drivers get a ticket from the police if they stop at any area other than a designated bus stop…..

Same in every sane country in the world.

No hate. I love my home and I love my people but I hate the way we have grown so entitled. Simply being a BVIslander in the BVI does not mean you don’t have to care about safety, other people, general rules designed to make the growing place function, but all too often we just treat it like it’s our yard and no one can’t tell us what to do. It is un-civic, childish and makes me ashame.
So stop stop knee-jerk attacking anyone criticizing BVIslanders to dodge the facts.

is saying )> stUUUUUPS , talking ain’t WUKIN – charge them some af the acting like trump greedy / the government needs to introduce a bus service or a price control according to how far you going

  7. Bus Rider says:

The powers that be should study the way the buses operate in St Lucia and Grenada. They have been doing it for many years and it works very well. You can get to almost anywhere on those islands by the frequently running buses and they are very affordable…Grenada has a huge busy central bus station terminal where buses depart from and go in all directions to cover the entire island…many people working as drivers and conductors are employed in their bus systems. Was wondering why the BVI has not adopted such a system…?

Yes I know about taxis and taxis have their place and typical market but for the most part the people that would ride buses everyday are local people that cannot afford to pay the high cost of taxi rides every day…would cost them most of their daily income…

  11. Ratio says:

of taxis to buses on Tortola is about 10,000 to 1 on Tortola. Taxis stop anywhere on the road and disrupt traffic flow constantly. The bus drivers will do the same until the taxi drivers are ticketed and fined by the traffic police.

  12. Sure says:

Just like having to wear a helmet, and have an insured scooter when you’re buzzing in and out of traffic in town. Might as well issue a universal plea to ask drivers to please abide by the vehicle code (as required by law)

Nobody is going to be fining taximen from here any time soon for any reason. They won’t stand for it.

  13. No confidence says:

Our roads and drivers are a disgrace and there is no policing the bad drivers for reckless and illegal driving or for the government’s poor maintenance of the roads.
We need UK intervention, or this will never change.

  14. captain obvious says:

taxis are the problem not the people who catch them

  15. THINK! says:

Where are the bus stops for people going West from town?
