Vanterpool insists she’s tough enough to be made top cop

Acting Police Commissioner Jacqueline Vanterpool has expressed confidence in her capability to assume the permanent role of Police Commissioner of the BVI.

Speaking on ZBVI radio recently, Vanterpool highlighted her achievements since taking on the acting position in August 2024, emphasising her commitment to maintaining public safety and effectively addressing crime.

Addressing concerns about her suitability for the permanent commissioner role, particularly regarding her experience and gender, Vanterpool expressed confidence in her qualifications. “I personally don’t think the job is too difficult for me as a woman. I personally don’t see myself being a failure if I’m in that post, because the records are there to show. When it comes to challenges, I deal with the challenges, I make tough decisions, I deal with tough situations,” she asserted.

Vanterpool also commended her support team and credited them for reducing crime in the territory. “I do have a strong team that’s under me, and that’s a plus,” Vanterpool said. “That team has helped me carry the load, and that is why today we can report we have resounding results in terms of crime, in terms of arrests.”

Reducing crime in previously problematic areas

Vanterpool also pointed to the positive impact of the strategies implemented during her tenure, including reducing crime in previously problematic areas such as Cane Garden Bay, Purcell Estate, Free Bottom, and East End. She emphasised that these successes result from collaborative efforts and a commitment to proactive policing.

Vanterpool detailed the strategic measures implemented under her leadership, including the establishment of robust foot and mobile patrols and an increased presence of armed response units. These initiatives have led to significant successes, notably the dismantling of the ‘Money Boys’ gang, which had been implicated in numerous burglaries and robberies across the territory.

Despite these accomplishments, Vanterpool acknowledged the ongoing need for vigilance, noting that while many members of the ‘Money Boys’ are incarcerated, some individuals remain at large. She assured the public that law enforcement continues to monitor these elements closely to prevent any resurgence of criminal activity.

While acknowledging that crime remains a concern, Vanterpool said she remains optimistic about the future. She reiterated her dedication to continuous improvement and adaptation of strategies to address emerging challenges. “We are still doing as an organisation, still strategising and putting different plans in place to help to curb the upsurge of crime,” she explained.

Finally seeing police walking the street in pairs looking normal.

Instead of walking the street with a big aX machine gun like this is Gaza. I recall past Christmas on de Castro street there were police walking around with machine guns. Assault rifles like they can shoot or raise that and run around a crowd without hitting someone a elbow or gun butt.

Dressed in black with weapons how times change police in a fashion contest with the criminals instead of being proud of their uniform. Bring back the normal community policing.

AgPC Vanterpool, you lost my confidence when you spoke about the Money Boys Gang being dismantled. No disrespect but you’re either lying to the public or ignorant in understanding how gangs operate.

    @Kweenie:

We, students of history, know the colonial history and British mind sets very well.

Indeed, that position along with the Governership, have always been set asides for the UK gentle man.

It is also a fact that they would quicker promote a less qualified UK person, male or female, to the post before they rightfully making the current Ag. COP permanent.

Sadly, colonialism is a European mental construct, not a godly one, that has no historic good for other peoples, their well being or upward mobility.

    • What??? says:

“It is also a fact that they would quicker promote a less qualified UK person” – there are over 1,500 police officers of the rank of Superintendent and above in the UK; I would be surprised if one of them
is less qualified than the Acting Commissioner. It is a fact that none of them failed the Senior Command Course like …
