Vanterpool launching new political party
Less than a month after losing the National Democratic Party’s internal election for chairman, former legislator Mark Vanterpool has launched his own political organisation.
The new party is called the People’s Leadership Movement (PLM).
The PLM is scheduled to host a public forum tomorrow, where residents will have an opportunity to “meet the people behind the movement” and hear the party’s vision.
Vanterpool is expected to address the event, which is set for 6pm on Wednesday, May 15 at Pusser’s Pub, a business owned by the former legislator.
The development also comes less than a week after NDP Chairman Marlon Penn and the party’s newly elected president, Paul Hewlett, publicly disputed suggestions that Vanterpool had formally exited the party.
“As far as we are concerned, he (Vanterpool) is still very much a part of the party until we’re told otherwise,” Hewlett stated while stressing that the NDP remained united.
Hewlett and Penn made those comments weeks after outgoing NDP President John Cline stated during a Facebook Live broadcast that Vanterpool had effectively left the party after losing the internal election to Penn. Cline also claimed that Vanterpool took back office space he had reportedly provided to the organisation.
There has been widespread speculation surrounding Vanterpool’s status within the NDP after he wrapped his vehicle with NDP paraphernalia days before the internal election and immediately removed it following his defeat. A leaked letter later revealed that the former legislator had raised concerns with outgoing NDP President John Cline about the party’s delegate selection process ahead of the internal election.
Notably, Vanterpool has made no public statements since the controversy erupted.

Also remember that VIP was riddled with scandal and their leader was sent to jail. With all this they still were able to get 6 seats. The NDP only managed to get 3 seats. It’s about time that the BVI had parties and legislators that actually have a clear philosophical and practical program. In recent years, politics has revolved around “big men” who have egos and little else (no talent, no guiding political philosophy and very few morals).
