VG Ad Hoc Committee petitions governor for help on healthcare

Governor Daniel Pruce

The Ad Hoc Committee for the Urgent Enhancement of Virgin Gorda Healthcare has reached out to Governor Daniel Pruce amid ongoing public frustration with healthcare services on the sister island.

On Thursday, October 17, the committee, formed by concerned Virgin Gorda residents, presented a petition to the Governor, signed by over 800 residents and stakeholders. The petition outlines critical issues impacting healthcare services and seeks the Governor’s counsel to address urgent shortcomings within the system.

Key requests include advocating for increased funding and allocations for Virgin Gorda healthcare in the 2025 budget, exploring UK grant opportunities, and arranging for visiting medical staff from the UK. The petition also highlights the availability of medical supplies, concerns regarding the Nurse Iris O’Neal Clinic (NIOC) and its infrastructure, the status of the North Sound Clinic, and medivac options.

The committee was established following the tragic death of Revovion ‘Bucky’ Sprauve on August 31, who reportedly died after being denied timely access to medical services at the NIOC due to reduced hours.

Despite a community meeting held by government healthcare officials earlier in September, the committee has raised fresh concerns about the government’s apparent lack of urgency in addressing these pressing issues.

The people that are most affected are Black like they are.
Self hatred is a thing. Murder is simply a passing glance. So the “unsolved” is a good 100+ and no secret the identity of the killers among each other.

  4. Where is the root cause?? says:

The key request says nothing about addressing the real problem at hand—namely, the way private practices are draining the system, while the need for legislative reform in the NHI is ignored entirely. Instead, what we get is a thinly veiled attempt to make the Minister look incompetent. But let’s be honest: truly fixing the NHI would take actual effort. It would mean stepping on the toes of some very powerful people and taking money out of the pockets of the wealthy and well-connected. And, of course, that’s the last thing any coward wants to do. So, what do they do instead? They pretend to be fighting for the common man, hoping the public won’t catch on to their real political agenda. It’s a strategy built on appearances, not action, all while the fundamental issues remain untouched.

A rise of 300% in all private fees must have been foreseen by the three doctors in HOA at the start up of NHI. The contributions of employers and employees, as foreseen by whoever estimated the requirement to fund the scheme, soon proved inadequate, so that government has to supplement the contributions, all to the benefit of the private suppliers. The govt facilities, hospital and clinics, should be developed to provide all, or most services required, so that the public has a choice of free, or nearly free treatment, or if they can afford it, private treatment, for which they pay, and whose providers do not get subsidized by the NHI SCHEME.

Wasn’t there supposed to be a hospital on Virgin Gorda? Hospitals are open 24 hours a day x seven days a week and staffed.
