Walwyn blasts Premier’s so-called Trinidadian “spin doctor”

Myron Walwyn.

Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn has accused a government advisor of being divisive and suggested he would stop at nothing to remove him from the BVI.

During a recent Opposition press conference, Walwyn said the advisor was being paid $10,000 monthly from the public purse solely to act as a “spin doctor” for Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley.

Walwyn claimed that the individual is “causing nothing but confusion” and introducing “Trinidad politics” into the BVI. “I want him to hear me well. I’m going to live on top of you until you come out of here. Because this is not the kind of politics that we want in our country,” he said.

The Opposition member pointed to a graphic allegedly distributed by the Premier’s office, which suggested that the government had been cleaning up a legislative “mess” left by previous administrations, which included some current legislators.

Walwyn found this assertion offensive, particularly because he believes that the Opposition has been instrumental in helping the government pass various pieces of legislation. “It is this Opposition that has assisted and helped the government to pass all those pieces of legislation, and for him to turn around and suggest that he cleaned up our mess, to me, is so disingenuous,” Walwyn said.

Rogue Premier

Walwyn also expressed concern over what he perceived as troubling behaviour from the Premier. He claimed that Dr Wheatley indicated he would use “every area of the Standing Orders” to prevent the Opposition’s no-confidence motion from making it to the order paper.

According to Walwyn, this was a sign that the Premier was acting as a “rogue” leader. “We have seen this behaviour before. It looked as if somebody willed that behaviour to him, and he has now taken it up,” Walwyn said.

The Sixth District Representative also criticised the Premier’s decision to take sole credit for staving off the UK Order in Council, which allowed for implementing the Commission of Inquiry (COI) recommendations. He accused the Premier of ignoring the efforts of other Caribbean leaders who supported the BVI. “The man got up and said it’s him — because of his ingenuity and his leadership — completely forgetting the fact that many Caribbean leaders stood up for this country,” Walwyn said.

Walwyn also took issue with the Premier’s lack of acknowledgement of the Opposition’s efforts. He noted that in a recent press conference, Dr Wheatley thanked various parties for their contributions but failed to express gratitude to the Opposition for their role in advancing COI legislative matters.

Walwyn you being doing wrong. I cannot support you in this. As for the premier, I encourage anyone, if you cannot find help on island, bring in help and the premier is in need of help. The job has been offered locally and the locals have failed. Too many people want to see him fail because of their own selfish desires. Let the man work. Bring in help if you need to premier.
