Walwyn cleared of ‘Breach of Trust’ charge

Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn has been cleared of a charge for breach of trust by a public officer.

Walwyn faced the charge in 2022 concerning the controversial Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) perimeter wall project, which reportedly experienced significant cost overruns while he was serving as Education Minister.

In her ruling today, Senior Magistrate Tamia Richards determined that Walwyn had no case to answer and acquitted him of the charge. Former public officer Lorna Stevens, who was also implicated in the matter, was similarly acquitted.

Walwyn was represented by attorney-at-law Terrence Williams throughout the case.

This development marks the conclusion of a highly scrutinised case that has drawn public attention since its inception.

One of the unfortunate realities of politics is that individuals who have not been indicted can still find themselves labeled as guilty by insinuation, with little to no support from the broader community. Instead, petty political squabbles take precedence over principles. I agree with Mr. Williams and have long argued that the Commission of Inquiry (COI) did not uncover any widespread or systemic corruption. What it revealed were lapses in oversight and instances of negligence—issues that warrant attention, but nothing like the sweeping accusations being pushed by those who clearly have an interest in taking control of the British Virgin Islands. And yes, they do have such ambitions; dismissing this as “gaslighting” only avoids a serious discussion of the stakes.
What’s particularly telling is the silence from Hon. Walwyn, who has not spoken out against the COI when it targets those on the other side of the political aisle. This kind of selective outrage only serves to divide us further, making it easier for external powers to exploit these divisions. History repeatedly shows that when people allow themselves to be fractured by internal disputes, they effectively hand over power to those waiting to capitalize on their disunity.

Interesting points of view. I agree with you here in that the COI did not find widespread corruption but rather “lapses in oversight and instances of negligence”.

      Now, you noted:

“Walwyn, who has not spoken out against the COI when it targets those on the other side of the political aisle.”

      Could you elaborate further. Specifically:

      1. Do you think he should have spoken out relative to the COI while his case was pending in the courts?

      2. Do you have any suggestions as to why he did not speak out and remained “silence”.

Just thinking out loud about this case and all that has transpired since the charge was leveled against this individual, I am of the opinion that perhaps it was best from a legal and political point of view to have not attack the COI either way, and remain silent as you allege while his case was being litigated in court where it rightfully belonged.

Now that the case has essentially being thrown out, if he chooses to speak out about the COI, perhaps this is the time to do so now that he has vindicated if you will.

I happened to like Magistrate Richards, and think she is a fair arbitrator of the law. If in her judgement there was a no case submission, I respect that.

At any rate, let me hear your thoughts on those two questions if you wish to engage in further dialogue. Thanks.

Bravo! Great to hear, because I couldn’t understand how the school principal who went to Myron as education minister which was his capacity at the time to stop dope pushers arm with guns from coming on the school compound to sell crack cocaine to the future generations which prompted Myron to act with haste with many hands and man power to fence that school perimeter, which got fahie boys and them angry that they can’t juggle on the compound anymore so the did a number on Myron for stopping their cash flow from the drug trade.
