WALWYN: I have no hangups over who becomes Premier!

Walwyn

Sixth District candidate for the National Democratic Party (NDP), Myron Walwyn, has signalled that he is not overly concerned about who is selected as the territory’s next leader from among the ranks of his party if they win office at the upcoming general elections.

“You see, I don’t have any hangups about who becomes Premier,” Walwyn said during his campaign launch last Friday. “Marlon [Penn] supported me on the last occasion to be Premier and I am here supporting him strongly, to become Premier. Give the incoming Premier a round of applause please.”

The former Education Minister suggested that he had given up chairmanship of the party without fanfare after he failed to win re-election at the 2019 polls, arguing at his campaign rally that he had no misgivings about leaving the NDP in Penn’s hands.

“I gave Marlon the chairmanship,” Walwyn disclosed. “Because he’s competent, he can do the job. And we are back here now with him to hold him up.”

He contrasted this position with the governing Virgin Islands Party (VIP) which he indicated was previously led by a one-man show in former Premier Andrew Fahie, where “nobody could hold him up”.

“Marlon has a team that could hold him up. And so District Eight, give us our chairman on April 24 (election day),” Walwyn said, “because we’re not going anywhere without our chairman.”

Walwyn also revealed that he was the driving force in recruiting former Deputy Premier Dr Kedrick Pickering back into the NDP fold after the latter had broken with the party and started his campaign as an independent candidate for the second consecutive general election.

“When you want things done for the country where we are, you need the best minds assembled to get it done,” Walwyn said. “He (Dr Pickering) was giving a little trouble and thing. I tell them, boy, give he lil time, he got to cut lil style. But he came right back home.”

Rumours of infighting over leadership and policy direction plagued the NDP ahead of the 2019 general elections, leading to the departure of several of its members, including Dr Pickering, Archibald Christian and Progressive Virgin Islands Party (PVIM) members Ronnie Skelton and Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull.

Imagine, not one, not one candidate is thinking about, speaking of or even promising to or advocating for paying increments to those civil servants, active and retired owed, an across the board increase in wages, and in the minimum wage, given the extraordinary cost of living which everyone is burdened with., but the low wage earner suffers from horribly..

But they have graciously and deliberately enriched themselves with hundreds of thousands of tax dollars for life by creating a now referred to as a “GREEDY BILL” with legal legislation Is that heartlessness or what?

One of those now in power, in a comment section on social media, in a discussion on corruption and stealing BVI government money, just before last election, made a reply that stated, “shut your mouth, those before me did so i going in to do the same.”

Those same people were then elected wholesale. Their government became fractured, we know why, but the core leadership remains in tact and they now control from the ministry of finance and all others, sadly. Therefore, it is only the prospect of a COI, lenses of accountability and others that may curtail them from carrying out their stated intentions. Sadly, it appears that legislation, through a legal loophole, has been used as carry out the swindle.

These’re the same people who got elected, formed the new government, and are now in power, executing governance and in charge of finance.

It takes very little thinking or speculation to imagine what could be occurring with government money then, especially when that was the stated motive
    If elected from day one.

THEREFORE, THE SO CALLED GREEDY BILL WAS NO MISTAKE, BUT AN INTENTIONAL PIECE OF LEGISLATION ENACTED TO ENRICH THE CURRENT LEGISLATORS.

Because of the extra lenses that are now on the financial affairs of the BVI, they have sneakily taken A somewhat legal path to accomplishing the stated goal.

Because of the COI, AND the fear of it, the lenses on accountability, they have chosen smoke screen “legal” approach to attain their goal while making it appear legit.

They have created a legislation that have and will enrich themselves beyond all reasonable proportions, for life, which is dubbed the “Greedy Bill,” which is nothing more than a well thought out maneuver due to COI to fleece the government, AND ENRICH THEMSELVES.

Meanwhile, the civil servants, both active and retired are sucking salt and barely getting by on meager salaries while facing daily increases in essential commodities such as food, shelter and transportation, as they await their increments to be paid to them.

It is therefore hoped that this election brings forth a team of men and women who are pregnant with integrity, honesty and good heartedness and desire to do good to, for and by the people. At least give those who are owed their increments

Many, many many had increased heightened hopes during the NDP reign would have resolved the increments issue, especially, especially on its second term, but that never materialized. The VIP, well we know their story, as it is to unfold. But they gave nothing to the civil servants or the people in general. They proved to be only people users for votes for their own greedy interest.

Hence, we need a new team. We need a beginning. We need to bring back a cleansing in our politics. We need a team that has political hygiene as its mantra and practices. We need a team with personal and political integrity, political hygiene and political caring for the people and civil servants, and especially our retired civil servants in particular who are struggling day in day out.

I agree that VIP was horrible with Andrew Fahie as Premier and you can argue that those left of VIP followed him blindly and didn’t speak up with then should have, they would have to defend themselves as I cannot. But I think given what has transpired, Sowande deserves a chance to lead. The only question I have is that if VIP was so bad, why are they the only group fielding a full suite of candidates? I think it’s disrespectful to the voters to come with these half-parties while telling us how horrible the VIP is/was. NDP has Myron, Marlon, Sandy, Lorna, Coy -5 competent people on their slate. The others are just place fillers. PVIM has Ronnie, Mather, Ingrid – 3 competent people on their slate, the rest are space fillers. Fraser has a Party and he is the only candidate there. With things being so bad with VIP why are we still even considering voting for them? Why? I will tell you why, it’s because in some instances it’s scarier considering these others as they were just thrown together at the last minute, that’s how much respect they have for us. I am in the 6th District and I’m voting for Alvera/Lorna/Sheep/Sharie/Zoe.

    BVI Election 2023

May I say that this 2023 Election in the British Virgin Islands has become a Mockery! All these people running. Who will get the gold medal. Some of them not qualify. More women than men.

It looks like we are going to have a Female Government and a Woman Premier according to Claude Skelton-Cline.

Or either a Family Government because everybody is family, cousin and friend.

  32. Redstorm says:

I am not sure that statement is correct” When you want things done for the country where we are, you need the best minds assembled to get it done,” Walwyn said.

The best mind they were until they were enticed and drawn away from looking after the people affairs.

Allowing a young, man to pay for a plane they never see and highly risked the country purse does not indicate the best mind 7 million is not 7 pence.

Giving directions to pay for something you knew would be high risk does not indicates the best mind.

Building a wall with 83 contractors does not prove the best mind. It create jobs but in the most unethical ways. Now , if three candidates get elected would be the best ever seen within NDP.
