Walwyn slams Premier for too much ‘partying’

Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn has criticised Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley for neglecting his legislative duties in favour of excessive social activities.

Walwyn’s remarks followed a House of Assembly sitting that was deemed invalid due to procedural breaches. The controversy arose after Second District Representative Melvin ‘Mitch’ Turnbull highlighted that the government had violated Standing Order 8(1)(d) by providing only eight days’ notice for the sitting instead of the required 10. The Speaker ruled in favour of the opposition, declaring the sitting invalid.

During a recent interview on ZBVI News, Walwyn contended that this situation resulted from the Premier’s lack of attention to legislative responsibilities.

“The Premier has to settle down, stop the partying, stay off the radio from talking political nonsense, and get into his office and start to do some work,” Walwyn said.

He further emphasised the importance of the financial services sector to the territory’s economy and criticised the Premier’s handling of related legislative matters.

“The Premier is the Minister of Financial Services. He got up and he made a plea as to how important these bills were to the financial services sector,” Walwyn said. “A prudent and responsible minister would have made sure that he checked the dates for the sittings to have this very important matter addressed without interruption or violating the standing orders.”

Premier Wheatley previously dismissed the opposition’s objections as attempts to disrupt government operations. He argued that such actions could have severe consequences for the financial services industry. The government was facing a February 21st deadline to implement the Caribbean Financial Action Task Force (CFATF) recommendations outlined in its Mutual Evaluation Report on the Virgin Islands.

This incident is not the first time Premier Wheatley has faced criticism over his involvement in entertainment activities. In October 2024, Steve Parillon of YOLO Promotions revealed that he had pressured the Premier to allocate $220,000 of government funds towards a Vybz Kartel concert.

Parillon stated, “I persuaded the Premier, you understand? I pressured him.” Additionally, in April 2024, the Premier defended the allocation of approximately $670,000 for the BVI Music Fest amid criticism that such funds could be better spent on pressing infrastructure and healthcare needs.
