Walwyn to host D6 Christmas carolling contest

Residents of the Sixth District are invited to spread holiday cheer this Thursday as Representative Myron Walwyn hosts the District 6 Christmas Carol Competition.

The festive event will feature solos, duets, and group performances, promising a vibrant evening of traditional Christmas music and community spirit.

The competition, scheduled for December 19, will take place on the grounds of the District 6 Office in Stone Haven starting at 7 pm. “Well, what we have coming up… is a Christmas carol competition,” Walwyn said in an interview with ZBVI. “We are encouraging solos, duets, and groups to participate in this very, very interesting and festive celebration of the Christmas season.”

Performers will compete for the grand prize of $2,000, while a separate award will go to the best-dressed group, who must showcase Christmas colours such as red, green, gold, and silver. Walwyn revealed that 10 groups have already registered to perform. “That was our aim, to be able to have ten entries, and we’ve been able to achieve that, and we’re very, very happy with that,” he noted.

The competition rules require participants in solos to reside in District 6. For duets, at least one performer must be a resident of the district, and group performances must include a majority of members from the district. Performances are limited to five minutes and will be judged on vocal performance, creativity, and presentation.

The popular Four Strong Band will provide live entertainment, adding to the festive atmosphere. Attendees can also enjoy complimentary Christmas treats, including roasted turkey, ham, tarts, and traditional drinks like eggnog and guava berry.

Walwyn highlighted the importance of reviving the traditional spirit of Christmas carolling, which he said has declined over the years. “It’s an attempt for us to get back the Christmas season the way it was. Christmas many, many years ago, lots of carolling, people going from home to home, invoking and helping to create that good feeling that comes at Christmas,” he said.

The representative also hinted that he may join the performers for a solo on the night. “I’ve been practising in my bathroom. I’m a bathroom singer, and I think my voice has been improving,” Walwyn joked. “So on Thursday morning, if my confidence is sufficiently high and my vocal chords improve, you will definitely get a solo from me on that night.”

Walwyn encouraged families across District 6 and beyond to attend the event, describing it as a chance to foster community togetherness. “Our intention really is for this to be a good family event, for the families to come out, the children to come out and participate, and just have a little festive Christmas traditional move together,” he said.

  4. Hated By us. says:

When we were mere lil boys, we had to go to school with a bald head.

The bigger boys like Buck, Mello, Franklin, Melvin, Dorian, Albert, Alex, all the bigger ones from that generation use to have fun slapping our skulls, all in good fun by the way..But we hated it…

Today now, it is a major head style.
