Walwyn wants Premier investigated for $20M budget snafu

Sixth District Representative Myron Walwyn has called for an investigation into Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley regarding a multi-million dollar budget error.

At a recent Opposition forum, Walwyn pointed to a reported $20 million discrepancy in the budget, which he described as “a significant problem” that raises questions about fiscal oversight in the Finance Ministry, led by Dr Wheatley.

Walwyn criticised the Premier’s handling of budget estimates, particularly around civil servants’ salaries allocations. Citing Dr Wheatley’s previous budget address, Walwyn highlighted statements about ensuring no public officer would earn less than a living wage, with $10 million reportedly allocated to meet this objective.

However, Walwyn questioned the accuracy of this figure in light of the overall $20 million overestimation.

“Where did he get that figure from?” Walwyn asked. He further suggested that the shortfall now presents a challenge in funding critical initiatives.

Reallocating unspent funds

Dr Wheatley addressed the budget issue by explaining his government’s approach of reallocating unspent funds from initiatives that were not completed as planned.

“What that leads to now is opportunities close to the end of the year… it allows you some money to be able to put towards some other priorities,” he stated.

The Premier also acknowledged that some of these reallocations were used to cover errors in the earlier Schedule of Additional Provisions (SAP), enabling the government to meet critical needs, such as paying salaries until the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Walwyn raised further concerns about the BVI’s revenue streams. The Opposition legislator highlighted the need for substantial inward investment to support government spending, particularly following the recent approval of a $100 million loan, which he noted would add to the debt burden without immediately generating revenue.

“Where are you going to get the money from to pay for the $100 million loan?” Walwyn asked, questioning the government’s fiscal planning as the territory faces economic pressures.

Walwyn expressed scepticism, pointing to other Caribbean nations like Antigua, St Vincent, and Dominica, which he noted are experiencing economic growth. By comparison, Walwyn argued, the BVI is lagging in economic development, which he feels is essential for maintaining fiscal stability.

“Where’s the Virgin Islands in all of this?” Walwyn questoned.

I mean sure let’s keep harping about this 1 million dollar wall forever because that’s the same level of screw up as miscalculating the national budget by 20 million.
My question is why we have Myron in particular to kill over this wall that cost a million dollars when it had characters that come along after him and wasted much much more money and we don’t talk about it. The premier office alone done over a million in consultancies allegedly at least the fence there in reality protecting the school grounds you can see it and touch it tell me what the premier consultants doing.

Why do we have to borrow money for maintenance? If any company had to take out a loan for what should be routine maintenance that company would be bankrupt, and the owner would be thought of as a fool.
I think a lot of money is missing and as a taxpayer I expect and demand transparency especially after the COI findings!
