Water woes force temporary closure of ESHS

Persistent water issues at Elmore Stoutt High School (ESHS) have forced the school to close temporarily, shifting students to virtual learning.

In a letter to parents on Monday, February 24, Principal Vanessa Garraway explained that a major water shortage affecting the entire Road Town area had led to early dismissal.

Shortly after, a follow-up letter confirmed that the issue remained unresolved.

“Unfortunately, our ongoing water issues have not been resolved, and as a result, we must transition to virtual learning tomorrow (today), February 25,” the letter stated.

This disruption comes just weeks after Premier Dr. Natalio Wheatley acknowledged the territory’s worsening water crisis, attributing the problem to financial constraints and an aging distribution network.

“The water infrastructure in the Virgin Islands has been deteriorating for years. We have enough water production to provide 24-hour supply across the territory, but the problem lies in our distribution network,” Wheatley said, citing frequent pipeline failures as a key issue.

Residents, businesses, and now schools continue to suffer from widespread water shortages, with some areas experiencing prolonged outages. The Premier noted that ongoing maintenance efforts, including leak detection and the installation of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes, aim to address the crisis.

As of now, there has been no official statement regarding the specific issues affecting ESHS.
