We’re building our own gallows

Opposition Leader Ronnie Skelton warned that the BVI was building gallows for itself whenever lawmakers looked to pass certain restrictive types of transparency legislation in the territory.

Skelton made the claim as lawmakers discussed the merits of the Services Commissions Act.

“We can’t even get our people to cut bush,” Skelton lamented. “Nothing we can get our people to do anymore. To cut some bush, you got to go through a vetting process, you have to be registered, you have to bring your passport.”

“What kind of foolishness is happening in the country,” he asked. “This can’t be serious and you guys can’t see this? You can’t see that you’re building gallows for yourself?”

He further suggested that it was clear to UK officials and others suggesting such invasive legislation for the territory that it was unsuitable for the BVI.

Skelton contended that it does not matter what kinds of vetting systems are in place in institutions such as the police force, customs, immigration, and other agencies the Act sought to address.

“Wherever there are bad people, you could put as many systems as you want, they’re going to get through it,” he argued. “But you can’t destroy 90% of the people because 10% of the people bad.”

He made an example using the Elmore Stoutt High School, suggesting that the school should be shut down using the same reasoning because some have argued that 10% of the student population is bad.

“Why don’t we shut it down and we all go home?” he asked. “There’s no hope. We cannot allow them to do this to us.”

Lawmakers have expressed serious concerns about the provisions inside the Service Commissions Bill, highlighting that its rigorous vetting processes would invade personal privacy and deter locals from applying for certain public positions.

Some critics argue that the bill paints all public sector individuals as potentially corrupt, which could unnecessarily tarnish reputations and harm public trust.

SVG donates cash, food to islands affected by Irma
St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has already contributed US$100,000 in cash and over 2,000 pounds of food and water to Caribbean countries affected by Hurricane Irma.

And, Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves said while we have already made contributions, we are far from finished, and later this week, a construction barge will leave these shores with over 1,800 tonnes of food,

        water, building and other materials.

Last week, Irma, a category five hurricane, wreaked havoc on a number of Caribbean countries, including the British Virgin Islands (Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke), Antigua & Barbuda, Anguilla and Cuba and SVG immediately moved to assist.

Last Sunday, four Windward Islands Airways International (WINAIR) planes took off from the Argyle International Airport (AIA) with food and water and landed safely in St Maarten.

Plan your efforts; it is so hard to do? Your business just get up and use money; no, you plan your spending. Without planning you plan to fail, it’s that simple. From talking piddle. This place can never get any better the way you all speak.

You all need to stop blaming England.
Andrew brought this on us. He is the one who was adamant that Jaspert should call an Inquiry into the wrong doings of the former Administration.
The COI came and they did their job and all the recommendations were put in place because of all the corruption that was found during their investigation. Do not blame them, blame the former Premier.

A gallows needs a hangman. Volunteers? Or a hidden trip wire in the street.
What happened to the old system of supernumerary staff, who would be on the payroll and no need for vetting etc. they were the type of staff who did bush cutting, tree clearing etc. if we already have them they must be underemployed or idle. If we have to take them on unfortunately it will increase the payroll, but it would get them off the streets. The upkeep of our infrastructure is a national, if not international, disgrace. Which year did it all change? Under Romney, or Stout, or Oneal, or Another?. All those millions never seem to get allocated into ministries budgets so they can use it. So what is it spent on? Answers on a postcard please. The minister of public works complains he doesnt get the funds to do whats necessary. Why not? Does he budget for all that he needs?. Does his budget get approved? If not, why not? If yes, why doesnt he get the funds?

Why do we need to get our people to cut bush. Why not employ enough people via PWD to continually keep under control?

  9. Resident says:

When Ronnie hires someone for his company, does he not do a background check? Verify their education credentials, their prior work references, any criminal convictions?

Here’s the thing: if government workers backgrounds are not checked and there is a problem, everyone will be screaming they weren’t vetted. Hire a Customs officer who pockets fees, everyone will say he was a known thief. Hire an Immigration officer who lets in illegals, everyone will say he was a known people smuggler.
