Following an announcement that regional airline WINAIR is exploring direct flights to Virgin Gorda, WINAIR’s Chief Executive Officer, Hans van de Velde, has now held talks with Communications and Works Minister Kye Rymer.

The discussions centred on enhancing air travel options and improving the territory’s connectivity with the wider region and even internationally.

Rymer and officials from the BVI Airports Authority (BVIAA) discussed the airline’s strategic plans to introduce new routes and enhance the overall travel experience.

“Expanding air routes is essential for boosting tourism, business, and family connections across the region,” Rymer stated. He further described the talks with WINAIR as “a positive step towards strengthening our connectivity with Caribbean neighbours and beyond.”

WINAIR’s CEO shared the airline’s vision of expanding its network, emphasising its existing interline agreements with major international airlines in Europe, the USA, and the Caribbean. Van de Velde expressed optimism about the opportunities that the BVI presents, saying, “We see significant growth potential in the British Virgin Islands. Our goal is to provide not only reliable service but also new travel opportunities within the Caribbean and to international destinations.”

The meeting also highlighted WINAIR’s commitment to improving services that would contribute to the Territory’s economic growth. Mr van de Velde added, “The BVI’s unique appeal as a world-class destination necessitates a robust and seamless travel experience, and we are committed to meeting the highest standards.”

From a tourism perspective, the importance of air connectivity cannot be overstated. Director of Tourism Clive McCoy emphasised the critical role that ease of access plays in supporting the Virgin Islands’ tourism industry. “Collaborations like these are essential to ensure that visitors from near and far have better access to our islands, enhancing the overall visitor experience and supporting our tourism industry’s growth,” McCoy said.

BVIAA’s Managing Director, Kurt Menal, also welcomed the potential partnership with WINAIR, noting the importance of regional connectivity for the territory. “This partnership with WINAIR presents a significant opportunity to enhance travel options for both residents and visitors, meeting the demands of a growing tourism market and strengthening regional ties,” Menal remarked.

The proposed expansion is expected to boost tourism, facilitate business travel, and provide greater convenience for residents and visitors.
