Local football sensation Luka Chalwell has inked his name on the history pages by becoming the first BVIslander to play in the English Football Associations, Youth Cup.

A media release from the BVI Football Association (BVIFA) on Thursday said Chalwell represented Poole Town Football Club in a recent 4-1 victory against Dorchester Town, in the preliminary rounds of the tournament.

Speaking on his achievement, Chalwell, who in August won the most valuable award at the Youth Festival Trophy in the BVI, said: “I am grateful to have been given this opportunity with Poole and even happier to have helped the team advance to the next round.”

Local football advancing

BVIFA’s Technical Director Dan Neville said he believes Chalwell’s achievement speaks volumes of what local authorities are doing for the sport of football in the British Virgin Islands.

“The FA Youth Cup is known around the world, so to have one of our young players involved is another milestone in the progress [of what] our players are making and the benefits our programmes are starting to produce,” Neville stated.

“It is very important we continue to provide our home-grown players with a variety of opportunities and competition in order for them to reach their full potential,” he added.

Neville also said he hopes it will not be long before another local creates more history for the territory by competing in other major international football tournaments.

And so what if it’s his grandson does that make him less of a football player, it doesn’t change anything for him. The child is a talented football player and his. I visited the games and I watched his played and plays the game with his head and foot; he’s very talented he know and played the game very good. So Instead of negativity some complementing and encouraging words would be better. Congratulation Luka don’t mind the noise.

What does that have to do with his talent? As a BVIslander, I am so embarrassed by your ignorant comment. For all that Andy has done for football in the territory, is that the first thing that comes to your ignorant mind? Also, there are several BVI youth who are not related to him who are on a similar track as Luca. Get off your ignorant high horse and go and invest in your own grandchildren then so that they become greater folk that you obviously are. Thanks for all you do for BVI football, Andy, Dan and BVIFA.

Yes it is, but I think what you should’ve said is ‘Congratulations Luka’, instead you are implying he is somehow undeserving?? We should all be supporting the BVI Youth in whatever they excel in not making petty digs behind a computer screen.
