BVI not corrupt! Premier calls for retraction of ‘irresponsible’ claim

Premier Andrew Fahie in the House of Assembly on Thursday, April 25.

Labelling claims that the BVI is corrupt as an “irresponsible” assertion, Premier Andrew Fahie has called for a retraction of such statements.

Following the recent $250 million drug seizure that has implicated a local police officer, claims of corruption being present in the British Virgin Islands have been echoing in the territory. One of the persons who have come out publicly with that assertion is Governor Augustus Jaspert.

Premier Andrew Fahie took time during his Budget Address on Thursday to fire back at such claims, stating that the negative narrative is from persons who have a hidden agenda.

“This latest bust does not show that our system is corrupt, but rather it shows that our system and our officers stand up for what is right. So I am calling all those with hidden agendas, who are in covert ways trying many different strategies and using vulnerable opportunities to prevent the Virgin Islands from truly achieving the mandate given by the United Nations in Article 73 of the UN Charter for former colonies to become self-governing, to go and erase the irresponsible labelling of the BVI’s system and our people as corrupt,” Fahie said.

“This irresponsible statement must be retracted as it is a well-calculated attempt to try to stain the good name of the many hardworking law-abiding citizens, the local law enforcement agencies, and this BVI LOVE economy,” he added.

Negative comments took away from real message

Premier Fahie said the negative comments took away from the real message that should have been broadcast from the quarter-billion-dollar drug seizure — the largest ever in a British Overseas Territory.

He said the takeaway ought to have been that local law enforcement agencies can handle crimes of that magnitude.

“Their actions show that we have zero tolerance for any form of crime, and I thank our local law enforcement agencies for demonstrating to the world that in this country, the Virgin Islands, our systems work and add value and protection to the global economy and its fight against illegal activities,” Fahie stated.

“It is important to note that there will always be negative elements in each law enforcement agency in the world and even in communities, but let us not lose sight that a huge majority of our law enforcement agencies and our community are people with high integrity,” he added.

Premier does not condone crime and violence

The Premier also made it clear that he does not condone any wrongdoing or lawbreaking in the BVI.

He said: “I am not proud of the latest crime reports, including the shootings which my government and I denounce, and I say condolences to all those who have been affected in some way or the other by what has happened.”

Governor believes pockets of corruption exists

Meanwhile, during Tuesday’s joint media conference with Governor Augustus Jaspert and Commissioner of Police Michael Matthews, the governor said the 2,300-kilo cocaine haul proved that pockets of corruption not only exist in the territory but may be contributing to other major undetected illegal activities.

He said that major concerns regarding the security of the territory’s borders and its vulnerability to drug smuggling had increased following the bust.

On one hand there is a $60 million and more like a $100 million dollar deficit and you are going to spend $300 million on projects? From where? Stop your deflecting and stand up to your own in********ce. As far as the corruption, it is far and deep and everyone knows of it. It’s just a question of how the UK will deal with it. The drug bust just brought it to light but the real corruption lies with the po*******ns and cronies. The people who have become wealthy for no apparent reason other than the wield power. If you weren’t i******d you should have stood up next to the Governor and said that you would work together to weed the corruption out of the Territory. These sort of comments are the sort of thing you would hear from Trump.
The absolute fact is that the UK is not interested in taking back the BVI and would gladly hand it back to the people but they just can’t or won’t unless BVI is entirely ready.
The UK is willing to help for free in terms of border security, good clean governance, loan guarantees, etc etc. yet politicians spread fake news about the governor and the UK when really the focus should be on the ones who scream WOLF.
The one thing holding back the BVI becoming independent is PRIDE and FRUSTRATION that the UK won’t bend to the people who yell WOLF the loudest. Try working with the UK and the governor and guess what…..it will show a country with the right mindset, maturity and ready for independence.
I had so much excitement and anticipation for this government, sadly they have chosen the way of toddler tantrums instead of asking the UK to help them prepare for independence like grownups.

Some years ago. more like 12-15, a high ranking policeman during a Drug Bust, involving a shoot out lost an eye from gun shot wound. The site was in the area where Delta, (Pasea) is now located. In 1992 or 93, (30 years ago), the bodies of 2 young men, Bvi-Islanders were discovered somewhere in the Mount Sage area of Tortola, with their bodies riddled from military style gun shots. A third man would also have been slaughtered but suddenly becoming suspicious, backed out from going on what was supposed to be a ride and meeting.
It is no secret that BVI is recognized as a transhipment venue.
What the governor postulated during his press conference is that the smuggling of drugs, particularly the size/quantity at this time with borders closed, is happening with the help and assistance of others, (greed and corruption).
In America Donald Trump lost the election primarily due to his mishandling of the Covid19 pandemic; which in his own words he “Played It Down”, not wanting to alarm the population. There is no reason for the governor or the government to play down the the problem of guns, drugs and corruption in “Nature’s Little Secrets”

Sigh… Sometimes I think that Hon. Fahie really believes the things he says. Why as of late is every statement made about our shortcomings, a calculated effort? What seems to me to be calculated is the Premier’s agenda to create division between the government and the crown. We’re not falling for it. And OKAY fine, we may not have an insurmountable corruption problem of the magnitude you may find in other countries, but how can you with a clear conscience say we don’t have a corruption problem? The mere fact that a police officer was involved says enough. It is this type of denial that prevents the BVI people from supporting an independence agenda. Our leaders cannot be trusted to take accountability when it really counts. There is corruption in our police system, our public sector, the judicial system, the legislative system… Please wake up and/or stop trying to deflect from important issues that actually exist.

Everywhere has its share of corruption and the BVI is no exception.
We see it almost everyday in some small shape or form. Sometimes this is encouraged when it benefits an individual or company. We label some government officials as corrupt which can be identified time after time but what about you the people that condone and sometimes encourage this behavior?
This administration has its share very early as scandals started to surface. The same people making under the table deals talk alot, to their other friends, their side chick’s who might have a side chick also and so on. Really in the BVI people just can’t keep their mouth shut for investigators that can be a good thing for those doing wrong not so much.
This administration hired a few persons who have served time in prison for misappropriation of government funds, stealing amongst other things. These persons or person should not be I repeat not be holiday such post in any government or partial government organization, that says alot. The only agenda here is what has been laid before the people. The evidence are allover the internet just do a Google search for yourself. There are other qualified persons with clea. what y’all fail to see is that the governor is alluding that the BVI is corrupt. And as a leader of the BVI Andrew fahie is defending the integrity of the entire bvi and I commend him for that.

Let me ask this question.. if you live in a large extended family househoold and your brother, sister or cousin commits a crime would you label your whole famy as criminals?

I will answer for you… No you would not.

Believe my words if.the governor pushes corrupt BVI label… that’s just his stepping stone towards UK control of the BVI 。。。。。 。,。.

Please have an open and think.

Look at the Bill’s like the one for medical marijuana which will generate income for the bvi…. he has not assent it yet. why do people think.that is? because if we are able to.generate the proposed income.that puts us on a better financial footing and the UK.does not want that

Please do not allow Hon. Fahie’s emotional tactics to influence your thoughts. The governor said that there are pockets of corruption. Since you want to talk about semantics, to say that there are pockets is hardly insinuating that the entire country is corrupt. It means that we know where said pockets are and should do what we must to close them. Simple. Really try to exercise some objectivity as you read the news, and identify when manipulation might be present. As far as the medical marijuana bill goes, what sense does it make that we will have farmers cultivating the product and other personnel handling distribution for export, while the “drug” is still criminalized for locals? 1. It’s unfair and unbalanced 2. Sooner or later there will be holes through which the drug will seep out before export. The governor is using his brain. The bill needs to be revised. This has nothing to do with divisiveness.

. Adults are allowed 1 gram and Self declared therapeutic users are allowed 50 grams. By a doctors prescription the upper limit is left to the doctor to decide upon. This opens the way for medical/therapeutic tourism and gives access to residents with limits to the amount that is legal to possess.

    • Corruption Hell yes! says:

No Corruption in BVI? Only if all eyes are closed. The said premier had Body Guards for almost a year since the election. He was also shot at while at National Bank some years ago. A former Chief minister was robbed in his house and and left tied up. Several murders remain unsolved for many years without anyone offering any information. A former Speak of the House was called on to resign his post during the 1990s because he was (renting a floor of his building to the government; but today 4 members of government are either doing business with the government or allowed to work and compete in the private sector. Of course there’s a reason why the lady who ran in the *th with the VIP in 2007 and helped the party to win 11 of the 13 seats, but was made a one-timer when she ran again in 2011 and has been running as an independent since, (but not winning)

  53. Agree says:

The premier needs to leave the Governor alone why didn’t he himself give a statement about the bust none of the high ranks leaders are speaking up because they sure no what’s going on and who endorse them when elections time is near and why they didn’t want to have the Uk ships in the water as it was blocking their additional income containers miss from off the ports where it protects by guard and moden technologies like really who do I all think your fool the 2 police that got caught was part of the fall back plan and yet u all want a local commissioner to head the police department that would be the worst decision every made. The Governor is in his right to say what he said but let Scotland Yard step in u will see all who get exposed BVI people look out for there own even if it’s wrong or it kills them why u think B**they couldn’t touch him because he took care of his own so they had to return the favor or be eligible to be exposed. It way bigger than all of us and we know it why do evidence go missing and police officers get break when the get caught why is it we don’t hear about the 3 other officers that was in a previous drug scandal.
But the second a young man or woman get caught stealing it’s a big topic or Cauchy with some weed or something we all have something to say so why when it’s higher up the food chain we must stay quiet. Where is Cline on his talk show with a open platform to speak on these matter rather than try to blame the Governor for exposing the BVI for what it is Tortola is a storage unit for these drugs because they like easy money and hush money look the other way as they all it things we need to be vocal about.

  55. Not corrupt? says:

How can the man that has taken a*****age of the COVID pandemic claim there is no corruption? He has awarded contracts to friends to provide accommodation for those in quarantine, he has awarded contracts to colleagues to supply security for persons in quarantine, he has awarded contacts to friends to sit two barges (which have done nothing)in the channel between BVI and USVI, he has employed a consultant (at a hugely inflated price) who talks rubbish. And that’s only the tip of the iceberg, take a look at what is going on at Beef Islands and with the new Gambling legislation if you need further confirmation.

What about operation Lucan the court case with those Dominican police officers was a fiasco. It’s just like the pier park, 7million for plane and wall. We will see if this case will just be another one that will be put on the shelf by Jasper.

  57. Bvi Electricity says:

Here is another form of corruption and there is no one to appeal to. BVI ec decided to increase my deposit from $200 to $400. They have my email. My telephone number and my mail address but choose not yo inform me. After paying my bill my service was cut for nonpayment because they
set the system to allocate my payment as as the deposit. Now who do i appeal to. This is corruption.

  58. What College you went too says:

Do you need a college degree to define corruption …. Why did Tom say we can protect our borders ourselves ? Why did Tom say use barge to chase speed boats doing illegal activities ? Why did Tom say we can manage our own affairs ? Go down you will hear !!! More ting to come out . The sage just start . Ayo play with Jasper …..

I have a few questions to ask,

    1. All these murders that’s gun related, what you think the reasoning behind it.

    2. Andrews why is it you are the only Premiere, that needs bodyguards.

You know the old people have a saying, when you got COCO in the Sun you got to watch out for the rain.

I am just saying. So if you want to continue with your straight face lies a wake up call for you, the people are sick and tired of your government. Trust me if the UK takes over they will not say anything because VIP or NDP is the same, and I think by now they clearly have a full understanding that none of your are capable of running this country. You probably good at running it into the ground with your corrupted greedy ways and don’t for a second think the people of the BVI don’t know.
