Cabinet agree to pay RDA members

Members of the Recovery and Development Agency — the unsalaried body established to govern the territory’s recovery effort for the next five years — are now to be offered payment.

The Cabinet of the Government of the Virgin Islands made the decision in a meeting this month.

Cabinet also approved for overseas members to become eligible for a ‘daily’ allowance.

It has not been specified how much each member will be paid nor has it been said how frequently they will be remunerated.

It is understood that at the time the RDA was established, the agency’s CEO Paul Bayly was the only RDA member confirmed to receive a salary. His salary is yet to be made public.

The RDA board comprises chairman Dr Robert Mathavious, Pastor Gregory George who was selected by the Premier, Maria Mays who selected by the governor, Sharie DeCastro who was selected by the Opposition leader, David Hancock select by the UK, Monica La Bennett who was selected by the Caribbean Development Bank, Clarence Faulkner (civil society representative), and Clyde Lettsome (private sector representative).

Local working citizens, from the poor to middle class need some economic relief also.

They are all suffering under daily cost increases of life’s necessities.

I cannot believe these folks were not being compensated in some way to begin. Nothing is for free.

While the RDA board need to be commended for their efforts and time in aiding the recovery, certainly, they have to eat like everyone else, and have families to feed.

    Good this matter was corrected.

They all have full time jobs and doing a community service. There are a lot of important committees and boards we’re supposed to remunerate them all. its not as if Board members are giving up their jobs, full time or actually working in the field. Struppes just more of our funds not going where it needs to.

Full time job or not, these people are putting in extra time. They need to be compensated for their work. Everyone in the recovery effort is getting paid. Why not them?

No good deed goes unpunished. They are going to be expectantly be criticized for their efforts anyway because that’s what people do in these neck of woods, so they may as well get paid for their time and effort.

There is enough money to go around to pay them something. If there wasn’t, I would agree.

Putting Faulkner on the board was not a good idea. He’s not for local people!

Have we forgotten how to give voluntary service to our country? Guess all the members on the government side will agree because they cannot say no to the premier. The deceased member will be surely missed. Everything whether good or bad for this country will go through .
