City to investigate reported stench in Village Cay area

A section of Road Town captured in January 2018.

The Office of the City Manager will be investigating a reported stench detected in the Village Cay area of Road Town.

This comes after BVI News received reports from persons conducting business in the vicinity who said the smell became noticeable at least two weeks ago.

When our news centre contacted City Manager Janice Braithwaite-Edwards on Wednesday, she was unaware of such reports, but assured that the matter will be investigated as early as today, Thursday, December 10.

She said similar reports have reached her office in the past and tests were conducted in the area to determine the source of the foul odour.

“I’ve been in this job over nine years now and that is a recurring incident and so we have also gone and tested the water because the people are saying it is sewerage. But, one of the things that we do know is that maybe people are not using their grease straps properly and so some of the stuff that are coming into the water maybe from the grease straps in that area,” the City Manager explained.

She added: “But if there is a stench in that area, it is not an abnormal thing because in that area, usually the water is stagnated and we have tested the water over the years and we have not found any sewerage in water to say ‘well, it is caused by sewerage’. But, it is something that I will have to research and get back to you.”

Seems to be seasonal

Brathwaite Edwards said the stench seems to be something that pops up during certain periods of the year.

She said: “It’s like it goes through a season. Every time it comes up, it comes up during an offseason and the water in the area is very stagnated. It does not get what they call the sea motion so that the water can be turned up. So I guess when it settles and then all the debris and everything else runs into there, it formulates a stench.”

Following the investigation, BVI News will provide the public with an update of the findings.

  3. ITS SEWAGE says:

IT IS THE CLEAREST CASE OF RAW UNTREATED SEWAGE BEING LET INTO THE WATER THAT YOU COULD EVER SEE.

THE WATER IS BROWN AND SMELLS LIKE A TOILET.

IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH GREASE FOR GOODNESS SAKES.

SOMEONE IS POLLUTING THE WATER ON A LARGE SCALE WITH RAW SEWAGE.

Lack of rain and everything stagnates in the covered drains.
Maybe pump seawater into these covered ghuts to continuously flush everything out.

    • Come on now says:

D**n shame the Capital City of the BVI smells and looks like a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY. THE DIRTY FUNKY RUN OFF IS FROM THOSE HOUSES SITTING ON THE HILL. THEY WANT TO PUT UP BIG HOUSES TO SHOW OFF BUT THEY DON’T HAVE ENOUGH COMMON SENSE TO PUT A SEPTIC SYSTEM IN PLACE. NO WONDER SO MANY PEOPLE HAVE BREATHING PROBLEMS. I DON’T WEAR A MASK FOR PROTECTION FROM COVID ONLY, I WEAR A MASK TO PROTECT MYSELF FROM INHALING THE SEWER AND THE GARBAGE DUMP STENCH.

  6. Not welcoming says:

For anyone that wants to eat at —, the stench is a turn off for sure and has been ongoing for weeks now. Why didn’t they not raise it with the city??

    • Oh no not I says:

Exactly, I will not eat somewhere where I have to smell Funk. Eating there is like sitting on the toilet while eating. YOU DON’T EAT WHERE YOU TAKE A DUMP.

  7. Ongoing Problem says:

This has been a problem for years. Open sewers draining into Road Harbour from both sides of the marina. For the City manager to say it’s the 1st she’s heard of this is disingenuous. Numerous Village Cay managers have addressed the issue in the past, always falling on deaf government ears. Perhaps some hearing check-ups are in order.

Come on BVI get your act together as one tourist mentioned this is becoming a 3rd world country. Even in town the smell is unbearzble. For goodness sake can’t they build something around the ugly pumps on the opposite of Vanterpool plaza that entire area is giving town an ugly look.

  14. smh says:

No infrastructure plain and simple and has been this way for rolling of donkey years. Government after government after government puts a band-aid on a gaping wound over and over and over. Just as they do most of the infrastructure in the BVI. Things never change! But hey, let’s buy #$$$$$ worth of palm trees and other un-necessary things to make us look good.

  15. Stinky says:

Easy to resolve – DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME. So many jack… of all trades and unable to do any correctly out there. The contractors thrive on “repeat business”
