Detainees reportedly overpower security personnel at Castle Maria

Hotel Castle Maria

Information reaching BVI News is that detainees held at Hotel Castle Maria in Road Town overpowered security personnel stationed at the facility this week.

Highly placed sources told our news centre that a handful of detainees were met outside of their rooms and a conflict ensued between them and security personnel.

It is reported that the detainees managed to pull one of the officers inside a room and attacked him.

BVI News understands that during the tussle, one of the detainees managed to break free and proceeded to release the other detainees at the facility by unlocking their respective room doors and causing them to then roam free.

A small riot reportedly ensued inside the facility and police were summoned to the location to render assistance. It is said that they met security officers trying to contain the situation.

Our news centre was told that police had to utilise pepper-spraying to regain control of the detainees. BVI News is not aware of any managing to escape the facility as a result of that incident.

Local law enforcement authorities and security personnel have a continuing history of having detainees escape on their watch.

Premier Dr Natalio Wheatley announced recently that his government has assigned hundreds of thousands of dollars in next year’s budget to build a detention centre for illegal immigrants.

Again …. this reality show goes on. What’s ‘overwhelming’ is the complete ineptitude on regular display by our public officials (and their privately owned security companies) at the tax payer’s expense.

No plan, no thoughts, no sense, just plain out don’t give a $hit, do nothing, get paid, no questions!

Why keep them? Put them on a plane with 24-48 hours and send them back. If you can’t do that, well, put them where other people who break the law go….prison.

Keep playing with these people! We should NOT be spending money housing these people for long periods. It may sound inhumane but we have our own s**t to deal with. These people should be sent back to their country within 3-5 days of being here, I don’t see how hard that is. You will wait until they escape and fuck with someone before doing anything about it. These are desperate people with nothing to lose and we continue to take it so lightly.

So rather than just saying the detainees escape as per usual they claiming they were overpowered now? Question why is it regular security guards and not armed officers watching these people? Why we have to be backwards with everything? ?

What do we expect when security guards and police officers are not armed with the relevant tools (guns). This will continue to happen as long as we have unarmed guards on duty.

  11. Blockade says:

Well the UK Navy offered to protect the sea borders of the BVI in 2020 but the VIP government refused their assistance. Maybe the UK will now order their Navy to blockade the sea borders of the BVI to intercept all criminals attempting to land in the BVI.

The blockade would be like the USCG blockade of Cubans and Haitians attempting to land in south Florida now: Intercept the aliens at sea, take them aboard their ships and repatriate them back to Cuba or Haiti by ship NOT in airplanes. The UK ships would just have to take these aliens back to St. Martin because that was the last departure port.

  15. ... says:

So all the atrocities that goes on in Haiti we are playing fool to allow ourselves to be exposed to because of humanitarian nonsense which dictates they must be housed in a hotel, and minded by a ‘security officer’ rather than an actually secure location.

News flash we dont know these people…

  16. Observer says:

I have read the comments so far and these detainees cannot be sent back so easily to their countries.Once they claim asylum status ,there are international laws in place that designates the country that they are in to provide basic human rights to them .That is why many countries try hard for people not to reach the land border of their country. They can only be sent back if their asylum status isn’t granted which is the case most of the time but unfortunately this process takes a long time with UN.

Govt need to do the hiring of security for all govt institute, get good people pay them well, the college got it right, follow that example.. These private people paying 7-8 -9 $ per hr. Is craziness, cant expect to get quality service…

  18. SMH says:

Why are they still be detained at a hotel? I may so heartless but they endured more disregard for humanity in seeking to enter the Territory illegally. They should have known of the consequences of breaking the law. There is much need for humanitarian efforts on the Citizens of this Territory than to take on humanity scrutiny of what outsiders and locals may talk about. We nerd to focus on Our Own before feeding into the words and likeness of what Others say or do. Enough of this shit about holding detainees on Tax Payers expense who are in dying need of economic hardship relief. Only in the VI our own suffer for the humanitarian of others.

  19. Not again! says:

Why are we housing these individuals again? And if housing is absolutely necessary, put them in Balsam Ghut.

  20. Gadaman says:

Then they’re on the news saying there children refuse to eat the meals provided. B.V.I weak.Just like Democrat ran states and cities.

  24. redstorm says:

THE INSANITY CONTNUES! Did The Human Right Declaration clearly state that illegal migrants are to be house in proper, well ventilated building? If so, when they are caught put them back on the next flight and stop using tax payer money to think this problem can be solved by weeks of hotel stays.

  25. HERE WE GO AGAIN says:

Immigration effing around with these people. Walters, jennings, smith , frett never played or toyed with their sorry a** but hey. It’s what it is.

  29. Home Boy says:

So sad, we got to get illegal immigrants out of our territory within the shortest time possible to avoid this repeated situation. These people are desperate and would do anything. It’s unfortunate that they end up on our shores, this is causing the Government thousands of dollars and at the same time putting our so call hired Security at risk. We urgently need a proper Detention Centre, no question about that, we can’t have these desperate people staying in a facility that is not built for what it is used for. It’s a sad situation, but we got to deal with it up front as illegal immigrants will always be coming to our shores. We need funding assistance for this venture urgently as I know the Government don’t have the funds they claim they have to build a Detention Centre.

  30. Home Boy says:

Don’t agree with the last comment, this is a very risky situation and the facility is not a safe place for these illegals.

  31. De Silent One says:

Wow! Here we go again with this unfortunat situation. The facility is not adequate to house those people and therefore creates this ongoing problem endangering the security lives. It will only get worst if not remeded ASAP.

  32. Uttter says:

Why are these guys coming here when we already have
The fake bishop, Fat Albert and the Esteemed
to take car of all the criminality?

  34. You see it says:

The people are not coming to stop in the bvi everyone here about the American dream that what they dreaming for leave them let they go why the bvi tax daller have to be spending to bring them here , ok some one just tell me that the bvi official found they on island of the bvi most time , then you all need a vessel to take them back to where they from because they could kill a watch man any time

  35. J says:

I believe that the best place to house these people is at our local prison or in the police stations where they can be properly secured for a few days then flown out. Why pay security forms when the jail cells are empty most of the time? Why not build the new facility for illegal immigrants at the prison since we already have paid security up there? Even if we need to hire a few extra persons, it will be more cost effective then what the government currently has in mind.

  36. Jim says:

Bvi is turning into a police state run by criminals

  37. Tourism for detainees says:

Surprising if there isn’t a tourist destination flyer circulating by now marking Hotel Castle Maria as the number one spot for detainees from abroad. Might as well send a team from tourist board to that country to do more promotions. Send mitch too for good measure and to mention the word ‘environment’. Maybe the police commish could direct the next video. Everything else in this country run backward so why the heck not!

  38. SMH says:
