E coli outbreak: Local food stores recall romaine lettuce

At least two major local food distributors have issued a recall of products containing romaine lettuce, which may be contaminated with E coli.

OneMart Supermarket as well as RoadTown Wholesale (which operates RiteWay Food Store, Fine Foods, and Cash and Carry) issued the recall of a number of products with that type of lettuce.

Reports coming out of the United States — where the territory’s food suppliers are predominantly located — are that dozens of persons who consumed this latest crop of romaine lettuce have already fallen ill. Some have even been hospitalised.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, therefore, issued a statement warning persons not to eat the lettuce. The warning was issued on Tuesday, November 20.

The contaminated lettuce is not limited to one brand.

Products that may contain contaminated romaine lettuce include hearts of romaine, baby romaine, spring mixes, and Caesar salads.

Editor’s Note:

E coli, which is short for Escherichia coli, is a type of bacteria that lives in the intestines of people and animals.

on the matter of food safety and health: Dear food and health officials.

Please enhance the inspection of food storage, preparation and cleanliness at the super market in —– in particular.

People are getting really sick to often. Getting sick from the food there has been an ongoing occurrence.

As such, something needs to be done. A gentleman suffered terribly yesterday and almost ended up in the hospital after having breakfast there.

I and others have also been stricken with illness after eating meals from there.

It is believed that storage temperature of foods needs to be increased and preparation practices need to be checked and inspected regularly before someone actually dies from food poisoning, as such is a frequent problem there.
