Fahie to OECS: We need to unite, stand up against UK, EU

Premier Andrew Fahie wants jurisdictions within parts of the Caribbean to unite to collectively put up resistance against global superpowers such as the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU).

The Premier told member countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) last week that they and the BVI share similar struggles from one or both of those superpowers.

In that vein, he said OECS countries have a ‘shared interest’ to ‘defend and protect’ their respective financial services sectors from what he described as “unfair and onerous demands from a few in the United Kingdom parliament and the European Union”.

“We also seek sub-regional solidarity in standing up to a new aggressive push from some members of the United Kingdom Parliament, which seems determined to issue edicts to its Overseas Territories in the region, without paying attention to the expressed will of the people, and ignoring our own values and customs which are deeply fashioned by both history, geography and our faith,” Fahie said.

“This OECS body is indeed one significant opportunity for us to all join together, stay together, and sing our own song in the same key and in the same rhythm,” he added.

Members of the UK parliament and, in some respects the EU, have been gunning to impose policies that disadvantage the territory’s financial services product.

There are also proposals to force same-sex marriage and other policies on the BVI and other Overseas Territories.

Not all of OECS countries are dependant territories. So UK decisions will not be an issue to them when it come to public registries, same sex marriage and citizenship right to vote.

The UK has no jurisdiction over OECS countries that are independant. Some of these countries do not provide offshore vehicle business.
