Gov’t auctioning over 20 derelict vessels, yachts

More than 20 derelict vessels and yachts will be auctioned off in June by the Virgin Islands Shipping Registry (VISR).

This according to a joint media release by the Ministry of Finance and VISR, which revealed that bidding will officially commence in the first week of June.

“Bidding starts on Monday, June 3 and the last date to send bids is June 10. We are encouraging interested bidders to review the conditions of sale prior to purchasing any of the vessels/yachts as vessels would be sold ‘as is’ and without warranty,” said Captain Raman Bala who is the acting Director of VISR and Receiver of Wrecks.

Sealed bids must be signed and should include the address, full name and valid telephone number of all bidders and “should be addressed and delivered to the Ministry of Finance, Procurement Unit, Qwomar Trading #2, Second Floor, Blackburn Road, Tortola, VG1110, Virgin Islands (British) in a sealed envelope marked, ‘Auction of Derelict Vessels‘ no later than noon on Monday, June 10.”

All persons successful in their bidding once notified will have up to 48 hours to pay the bid and the bond amount via a banker’s cheque and will have up until June 30 to remove the vessel to a location of their choosing.

All vessels which are not removed by the winning bidder by the date specified will automatically forfeit the ownership and rights of the vessel together with the bond amount and the vessel will be repossessed by the Receiver of Wrecks and disposed at their discretion.

The list of vessels to be auction along with the conditions of sale can be found on the government’s website or at VISR’s office.

Government just announced that they want BVI Islands to head most or all investors company. Do you think expatriates going to spend money on boat now.

If you don’t give expatriates a reason to keep their money here what you think going to happen?

Why is the government getting into this business?? They need to turn boat disposal over to a salvage company that knows how to do this. There is 0% chance that this will work out and not end up costing more money that it would take to just scrap all these boats in the first place. We are coming into our 3rd tourist season since the storm. The governments role needs to be to clean this place up as quickly as possible so tourists will come back and start renting hotels and villas again. The USVI cleaned up all the wrecked boats 1 year after the storm. If we don’t mind our ways they are going to clean our clock!

People are using some of these boats to sleep in. What are they going to do once they are sold. – thing to talk?

  5. Confucius says:

So the government is allowing 30 days for the winning bidders to locate a salvage operator willing and able to move the boat by June 30th?

    Good luck with that!
