Gov’t needs to travel to global conferences

Third District Representative, Julian Fraser.

Deputy Premier Julian Fraser has stated that despite public condemnation, there is a need for government members to travel to global conferences where decisions are being made on serious issues such as climate change.

Public criticism for government travel increased when the Dr Natalio Wheatley administration came to office, as residents called for funds to be redirected to education and dilapidating infrastructure across the territory.

But Fraser — the current Minister for Environment, Natural Resources and Climate Change — said the BVI stands to benefit greatly when the country is represented at global conferences where important decisions are made.

“The United Nations’ conference on ocean management is coming up in France in June and as you know, the BVI economy relies on the ocean for the most part. A major part of our tourism product is the ocean so conferences like this benefit us directly. It’s important that we are there, and it’s also important for us to be at the Climate Change Conference in Brazil as well,” Fraser said on the Virgin Islands Voice programme.

He continued: “People try to condemn us for travelling, but if you’re not at the table, you won’t even get the crumbs because you won’t be there to pick it up. So it’s important for the Premier to make sure his ministers and their officers are exposed to what’s taking place around the world.”

Fraser also said people should note that donors — who can fund projects to mitigate against climate change  — generally attend international climate conferences.

“Speaking of international donors, we need money to deal with the environmental issues we have — from drainage to everything that happens around you,” Fraser said.

Small nations like the BVI are disproportionately vulnerable to the effects of climate change. They are highly susceptible to sea-level rise, storm surges, and other climate-related events which impact their economies, ecosystems, and infrastructure.

Knowing the impact on small nations, international donors are generally willing to fund efforts to mitigate the impacts of climate change on small nations like the BVI and other Caribbean nations.

Does the BVI have any voice or value to these conferences apart from the free travel, hotel and spending money? All these decades pardna been travelling and not ONE of them can get the BVI a public transport system!?!?!? Why are we continuing to allow the general public to be raped by these neck tie wannabe gangsters….why…?

  18. BuzzBvi says:

Perhaps BVI News could report on how many vehicles have had overly tinted window tint removed from their cars in the last month.
They could also report on what action has been taken against companies advertising the application of these tints on media house web sites such as this. Surely they are engaged in illegal activity applying heavy tints to cars.
Maybe they should be employed taking it off or replacing windows with it embedded.
Some journalism on that would be great please.
