Gov’t working on special waste management strategy for the BVI

Government will be introducing a special waste management strategy for the British Virgin Islands during the territory-wide 14 day curfew period.

Minister responsible for health and waste management Carvin Malone said government will roll-out what he described as the seven R’s of the waste management strategy — reform, restrict, reduce, recycle, reuse, return, and rethink.

“Clean plastics bottles, glass and aluminium cans should be stored at home and recycled after the curfew,” Malone said while describing part of that strategy.

Minister Malone said further details on the plan will be announced at a later date. He, however, assured that all stakeholders will be invited to participate and contribute in their areas of expertise.

A for the territory’s immediate waste management needs during the ongoing curfew period, roadside collections of waste have been rolled out to all communities.

Residents are directed to put out their household waste in sealed bags between 6 am and 7 am on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

Recycling Village Competition coming soon

Malone also said government is working on a community recycling initiative which will reward persons who excel during that competition.

“I will announce a village competition for students and households. Or maybe the village that collects the most recyclable items would be awarded laptop computers or other prizes to enhance their learning experience,” Malone stated.

Government is encouraging residents to recycle as much as possible during the ongoing curfew period that ends on Sunday, April 19.

Though I wish these temporary measures were put in place before the 24 hour lock downs, nonetheless, the temporary measures are welcomed and needed. Nevertheless, for the longer term, a holistic and comprehensive waste management plan is needed. In the US in some cities, automated trucks, ie, one person in a truck, are used to pick up regular garbage and recycle products.

The VI should take a look at the practicality of using this practice in Road Town, Sea Cow Bay, Purcell, Baughers Bay, McNamara, Huntums Ghut, Lower Estate, East End, Long Look, Paraquita Bay, Beef Island, …….etc. Under this plan, each property will be provided with a garbage bin; garbage will be picked once or twice a week. In the hill areas, other practices may have to be employed.

Further, recycling should be employed as much as practical. Recycling expands the life of landfills and reduces the demand on the incinerator. Though recycling may not be highly profitable, it provides a benefit, ie, reduce demand on the incinerator, increase landfills lifecycle. Heavy brush and large bulky items should be on different pick schedule, ie, quarterly.
