Health Ministry launches sexual health campaign ahead of festival

The Rise & Shine Tramp is a major activity during the annual emancipation festivities. It typically involves revellers gyrating on each other while being stimulated by water, paint, and soca music.

With the annual emancipation festivities just around the corner, the Ministry of Health has launched a sexual health campaign called ‘Wrap it Up’ to help reduce high-risk sexual behaviours locally.

The emancipation festivities include a variety of party events such as j’Ouverts and stage shows that typically involve alcohol and festive activities, often leading to intimate encounters among patrons.

Acting Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr Ronald Georges emphasised the campaign’s focus on promoting social responsibility during the festival, encouraging the public to “Wrap it Up before you wuk it up.”

“As part of the campaign, a few local laboratories have also agreed to offer promotions on Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) testing for the community,” Dr Georges said. “The labs will conduct their own advertising for these promotions, but we encourage everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to get tested and know their sexual health status.”

The acting CMO highlighted that the Wrap it Up campaign will target a wide cross-section of the community, with assertive graphics particularly aimed at the younger population, who are especially at risk of contracting STIs.

The campaign will feature audio and video interviews, radio commercials, newsletters, and press releases to support its message. These materials will address various issues, including drinking and driving, mixing medications with alcohol, the age of consent, issues around consent, and reducing high-risk sexual behaviors.

Earlier this year, statistics from the Ministry of Health showed a steady rise in HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases in the BVI. Over the past five years, more than 262 cases have been reported across all ages and demographics in the community.

even though the british virgin islands is an extremely tiny territory which is part of the british overseas territory, it is now 2024, be on guard, there is drone activity all over the globe. it would help if the british virgin islands would remain a british overseas territory because nations are fighting against nations and there are rumors of wars and famine and pestilence globally because of drone arsenal.

This is wonderful advice. Hope the young people heed it. They are so busy ‘living their best life’ which in their simple minds is dressing up and going out drinking and partying and having sex with multiple partners without condoms. The young ladies and young men have no respect for themselves or their bodies. Some of our brightest and best young women know some of the young men visit multiple homes nightly for sex, but have not a care in the world and are giddy when it is their turn.

So go ahead Health Services. Shout it from the roof top and I pray they are hearing, because some of them aren’t going to make it to 45 before getting seriously ill the way they are going. Come on young people at least protect yourselves with condoms. But more importantly protect your hearts from letting people trample all over you. Have respect for yourselves. Dare to want BETTER!
