The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) – the governing body for athletics worldwide – has donated $100,000 to the BVI Athletics Association (BVIAA).

The funds were donated for the rebuilding of the AO Shirley Recreational Grounds, which was ravaged during the 2017 hurricanes.

The IAAF had pledged to give the BVIAA the grant back in January at a North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association meeting held in Puerto Rico.

BVIAA President Steve Augustine used the meeting to outline the sporting needs of the territory that arose from the disasters.

In responding to the plight, IAAF President Sebastian Coe said: “We know this [grant] is not enough but hope it will at least get the member federations affected back up and running,” said IAAF President Sebastian Coe.

“We will continue to seek further funds and work with the region to ensure athletes’ training is as uninterrupted as possible,” he added.

Augustine, in the meantime, said the $100,000 grant will “go a long way” in helping repair the BVI’s sporting facilities.

“With the provision of this funding alongside the continued voluntary works of our track family, I am certain that our facility will regain and surpass the functionality it once had,” the BVIAA president said.

  2. This is great says:

This is amazing news for all the athletes and other people using this facility.

If we now can do our own part and keep this facility clean than the donation is not all for nothing.

We only deserve to get this donation if we don’t leave the field, the stands and even the track full of rubbish on a regular basis.

    We can do this!

  3. Thanks IAAF says:

Good news! This sport is doing so much for the youths and the marketing of the territory on a whole.

In the meantime hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on festival. No money for sports or it’s facilities any time soon. Crazy people. P

The money should be used to sourced the equipment overseas (stands) and local business (blocks, cement, etc) and the people who are skilled workers(masons, carpenters, plumbers etc) should donate the time and resources to help restore the field. The community uses it and our children need it as a stepping stone to launch their athletic careers.

Better send someone to watch the money or it will disappear faster than one can say “missing”
