I’m still confident in my legal team, says Willock after lawyer’s arrest

Willock

Speaker of the House of Assembly Julian Willock stands by his original team of lawyers despite one of his lead attorneys reportedly being arrested on suspicion of criminal conduct.

Willock made this clear via a statement released through the House of Assembly shortly after the reports on Wednesday. The attorney in question is Anand Ramlogan.

Ramlogan, who is part of Veritas Law, is representing Willock in the ongoing case against Fourth District representative-elect, Mark Vanterpool.

The statement said: “The Speaker of the House of Assembly, Honourable Julian Willock has reaffirmed his full confidence in Veritas Law, headed by Mr Valston M Graham and that value for money is still being achieved — one of the objectives of the new government. The issue surrounding one of the lawyers involved in the case, as reported by the media both locally and regionally on May 1, 2019, has also been noted.”

When BVI News contacted Willock for further comment, he declined to entertain a single question and said he was otherwise occupied.

“We sent out a statement on that matter. So confirm that you got the statement. I’m in a meeting right now,” the Speaker told our news centre.

BVI News also reached out Vanterpool but he too declined to comment on the matter.

According to Trinidadian news media, Willock’s attorney was arrested at Piarco airport in the twin-island republic Wednesday morning while boarding a flight to the BVI.

Ramlogan was supposed to be present to represent Willock Thursday, as Justice Ann-Marie Smith rules on whether Vanterpool will be sworn-in as the Fourth District Representative.

There is some irony in the statement about the Government wanting to get “value for money” as “one of the objective of the new government” by hiring a Trinidad law firm.

Firstly, why hire foreign lawyers rather than local lawyers (including paying their travel expenses)?

Secondly, why not use the Attorney General, who is on payroll and it is his job to represent the Government in legal matters?

Is this a purely personal fight on the part of Willock, so he is bringing in foreign muscle from outside of the BVI at the taxpayer’s expense?

while i agree with your comments about cost, the AG works for Government not the HOA.

the fact that the HOA has no legal representative needs to be looked at.

Veritas Law is a BVI law firm owned by Valston Graham, it is not a Trinidad law firm. Graham would have recruited as he saw fit.

You sound so ignorant and foolish. What the hell NDP have to do with this? The lawyer had this matter before the courts even before he was hired as Willock’s attorney. He should not have taken the job know he had law litigation pending in Trinidad. Sometimes you really need to stop the foolish about NDP and VIP it’s sickening now.

Anand Ramlogan for Financial Secretary!!!!! Would be perfect to have Andrew Fahie’s friend have his friend in control of our Finances. Seems like he knows how to do the necessary where finances are concerned. Certainly fit the way VIP are starting to point the country once again.
