Stating that indiscriminate dumping has resulted in a number of small fires at the Pockwood Pond incinerator on Tortola, the Department of Waste Management is now limiting access to the dumpsite after 4 pm daily.

Assistant Manager at Waste Management Neville Allen said this restriction which will now prevent garbage hauliers from entering the site when it is not being monitored.

He said these hauliers are known to indiscriminately access and dump their waste at the facility after incinerator workers have left the site.

While the facility will now be closed to the general public after-hours, Allen said compactor trucks will be allowed on the site beyond the restriction time.

They will be allowed up until 8 pm to dispose of their waste materials.

“The public will be notified when the site will be accessible during normal hours of operation after the situation is under control,” a media release from the Department of Waste Management then said.

Only last week, a major fire broke out at the dumpsite and posed a severe threat to the neighbouring BVI Electricity Corporation power plant. Local firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze after an estimated eight hours.

It seems the issue the facility is not being monitored 24/7 which it should be. The govt should find additional money to hire two workers to work the graveyard shift. Problem solved!

Unless recycling is considered no problem will be solved…. [email protected] …RECYCLING at the source is the only solution. Can gas masks assist this problem. Are there baby size gas masks as well? What will be long term implications of such a toxic environment for any living person? Who will answer these questions concerning the lives of the suffering residents of the bvi when last has any of you been to the virgin gorda dump? With no incinerator in virgin gorda what type environment is left for the children over there? Avoid recycling and promote an unhealthy future for the beautiful children.
