Inspiring! Inmate tops High School Certificate Programme

Twenty-nine candidates sat the February 2019 Virgin Islands High School Certificate Programme (VIHCP) exams but only two managed to pass. One of those successful candidates is an inmate at Her Majesty’s Prison.

That inmate is young Omarie Winter whose inspiring story is one showing his determination not to be a victim of his circumstance.

His achievement was recognised on Tuesday when officials at Her Majesty’s Prison held a ceremony to acknowledge “the positive efforts” of not only Winter, who successfully completed the programme, but the 12 other inmates who enrolled in the programme.

And though the 12 other inmates were unsuccessful in the programme that started in October 2018 under the leadership of former education minister Myron Walwyn, there are opportunities for them to retake the exam.

Resit an option

The next opportunity for students to take exams will be in October 2019. Registration runs from September 2 to 6.

Doing a resit also applies to the other 15 students from the territory’s general population who were unsuccessful. William Corey — a general population student — is the only other of the total 29 candidates who successfully completed the programme.

What is the VI High School Certificate Programme?

VIHCP, in the meantime, is a subsidiary of the Alternative Secondary Education Programme and is for persons without a high school diploma.

To complete the programme, candidates must receive a secondary school certificate in five courses — mathematics, English, science, social studies, and life skills.

Every subject except for life skills requires candidates to sit an exam. For life skills, each candidate is required to submit a portfolio, which is then assessed.

This is very commendable. This Programme will provide the conduit for inmates to reintegrate back into society. Kudos to Mr.Winter for his achievement and also the government for putting this on place.

That is great Omarie. Do not study those bad minded people out there. Even though you are making a positive move, you will still be judged by your past. But know that only God has the last say. No one knows what you been through losing so many of your loved ones. People can talk because majority has a normal life. A mother, alive, to confide in and run to. A devoted and loving father to learn from..
I hope you stay on the right track and don’t let your circumstance define and get the best of you. It is never too late to get a fresh start. You are the author of your life book.
