I’ve never heard of people being fired for criticising leaders

Deputy Governor David Archer, Jr.

Deputy Governor David Archer Jr has signalled that he doesn’t know of any public officer who has been victimised or fired after criticising ministers or elected leaders.

Archer, whose office is responsible for the public service, appeared on the Talking Points radio show on November 28 and was asked to comment on reports that some public officers have lost their jobs after criticising certain ministers.

In response, Archer stated, “I know of no example where someone has spoken out against a minister and lost their job. The reason why I say that is; for it to result in someone being terminated, it’s a very formal established legal process.”

Reports of public officers being fired as a result of criticising elected leaders often surface in the community. Those reports were particularly prominent under the Andrew Fahie-led administration. In 2020 for example, it was alleged that Cindy Rosan-Jones’ criticism of the Fahie administration resulted in her position at the BVI Tourist Board being made redundant.

Just before former Governor Augustus Jaspert announced the Commission of Inquiry, he had also revealed that his office had received several complaints of intimidation and victimisation in the public sector.

At the same time, elected leaders often deny that they had anything to do with public officers who were dismissed or sent on leave while matters are being investigated. According to Deputy Governor Archer, it is quite possible for government ministers to have no knowledge of these happenings.

“A minister does not hire or discipline an individual. That’s done by commissions like the Public Service Commission or the Teaching Service Commission. That’s meant to be a transparent process free from any interference from anyone. So, is it for someone to go through a disciplinary process and the Premier not be aware of it? Yes,” Archer explained emphatically.

Is this a joke? Nothing happens in this tiny place without the Premier knowing or the Minister responsible knowing or sanctioning it. These formal processes are just a smoke screen that they hide behind but they call the shots.

Of course they don’t fire you for THAT. They give you some other reason that you are being fired for. But that is the real reason you are being fired…..

What a crock of s**t, I was victimized for years, and you were very much aware, in fact my victimization started with you after I rejected your advances. Yes, there are instances with Ministers abusing their power and causing people to lose their Jobs, but that is not the root problem. The problem was and is the high-ranking officials like you, the Permanent secretaries that have a self-proclaimed GOD complex and their underlings that operate on their strength to victimize staff. It is laughable that you are claiming that you don’t know when you are a part of the problem

I really suggest people watch the actual interview which was a good one and look at the question he was asked which was if anyone in the public service was fired for speaking against a minister. His answer is correct, the tourist board and other statutory agencies are not in his remit. He answered based on his job and what he was asked.

If you can lie to the public so blatantly , no one will ever have credibility in anything you say from this day forward .
Why are public figures so dishonest ?
Are BVIslanders so gullible as to believe ?
Why are people so afraid to speak out . They are afraid for their jobs!! We live in the 21 century . This generation is not as dumb as you think . Believe your own li s !! Shame on you

  18. Lie detector says:

What a bunch of cock and bull. This must be a trick. I could identify up to November, 2022 how public officers are victimized by the elected Ministers. Its even worse if the elected officials are relatives to Mr. Archer he ensures it is done seamlessly and without a trace. They make you suffer!

  19. Read........... says:

The key word “Public Service” those persons were not Public Officers. Before you bash someone or have something negative to say, make sure you yourself can read to comprehend not just read to talk. Alyo talking about Port Authority which is a Statutory Board that have to follow rules and guidelines set by Government and Tourist Board who is also Statutory. If they choose to fire someone that’s ups to them. They were not Government employees so that does not make them a Public Officer.

This from a man who believes it’s right to run secret society clubs in a small democratic community and be making decisions at the highest levels of government. BVI have serious problems.

This man needs to go! How do we get him out of office? What’s the process?
He is so self absorbed and does nothing for the public service. Only thing he does talk about is customer service and he still can’t get that right. Look B* in the same entry level position for 15 years. HR is under him and you could never get any reform in that area. He needs to sit down!
Every minute ya look he doing some personal thing big big while the public service in shambles! Departments understaffed, no disciplinary actions for offenders, salary is the pits that Public officers have several jobs and small businesses to make ends meet. This man is responsible for a lot of the issues the public service faces because the portfolio of HR is neglected. People doing jobs higher than their post and can’t get paid.
On here acting like he ain’t know what’s going on.. Sir goodbye..
    Time to retire please..

  24. Liar Liar Liar says:

And here I thought I was the only one that knew he was a na**y good for nothing. I was a contract worker who’s contract wasn’t renewed ….

  25. Woza says:

The bothers look after themselves and he is one of the highest powered persons in Govt who plays a game to protect his butt. Who can fire him?

  26. In the dark says:

So tell me also that you dont know of public servants working there butts off for more than 20 years and is not permanent and pensionable? Even when you sent the ?memo to regularised those working over 20 years that HR in health aint budge. People are near to retire and nothing yet. Whn destroys the recommendations when they are sent up? Ask TC in HR. They talking about people must have some high education to be P&P. Bull crap. I was employed for more than 20 years without high education. I worked like a person with a PHD …it wasnt a problem but now to get P&P they talking about high education. Did you know this sir? We are on the outside and suffering. This MUST CHANGE FOR 2023. TELL ME THE CRITERIA FOR BECOMING PERMANENT AND PENSIONABLE PLEASE
