Man arrested for assaulting ex-girlfriend

BVI News understands that a 37-year-old man was arrested and charged last week after allegedly attacking and brutally beating his ex-girlfriend.

It is understood that the suspect and the victim had been in a relationship for over three years but ended things several weeks ago. On the night of the incident in Nottingham Estate, the woman was reportedly at home with her current partner when the suspect appeared and demanded entry into the house.

After several refusals, the suspect reportedly went to the back of the house, removed a window pane, and entered the dwelling. He then allegedly attacked the woman and beat her severely in the presence of her current partner and teenage daughter.

The woman’s partner reportedly attempted to intervene but was threatened by the suspect, who allegedly pulled a weapon. The man then fled the scene and went to the police station to report the matter.

The suspect was later arrested and charged for his actions.

In the meantime, sources say the woman appeared visibly shaken following the incident. She reportedly sustained injuries to her head and body and sought medical attention. The extent of her injuries remains unknown, and it is unclear whether she was admitted to the hospital.

It is also unclear whether the woman’s partner and teenage daughter sustained any injuries during the ordeal.

According to a recent report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, violence against women remains a pervasive issue in the Caribbean. The report notes that women who experience abuse are often blamed for the violence and are perceived to have provoked it.

In the BVI, while police typically respond quickly to reports of violence against women, there remains a troubling trend of women and girls being victimised by intimate partners or men closely related to them.

The continued protection and secrecy…arresting and charging a violent individual his victim sustained injuries..however, his name and other pertinent info not mentioned.

With all good intention, please help me understand the laws and practices in the territory. Is it not a practice to publish names of persons arrested and charged with a crime?
