Man fined after stealing, drinking 13 bottles of champagne from neighbour

A Long Bay man who confessed to stealing more than a dozen bottles of champagne from his neighbour and consuming them all shortly after has been fined $600.

Akil Anthony will serve 30 days at Her Majesty’s Prison if he does not pay the fine, which he received after pleading guilty.

The offender was also ordered to pay $1,920 in compensation to the neighbour. He must pay the sum in one week or serve three months in prison.

While handing down the sentence on Monday, Magistrate Innocent further ordered Anthony to attend counselling for alcohol abuse.

What happened

The court heard that on February 10 this year, Anthony entered his neighbour’s Long Bay villa through a window and escaped with 13 bottles of the champagne.

When the neighbour returned home, he reportedly noticed that the boxes in which the beverages were stored were virtually empty.

After investigating the premises, he noticed a freshly-made path through the bushes leading from his house to Anthony’s house.

After further investigation, the complainant reported the matter to the police.

Armed with a search warrant shortly afterwards, police found empty champagne bottles in a garbage bin inside Anthony’s villa.

When confronted, he reportedly said: “I went to the neighbour’s house and took them,” adding that he had consumed all 13 bottles of the champagne.

He was subsequently arrested and charged.

    Not so cheap anymore huh?
Plus a conviction on the resume.
I’d say that’s not worth it.
But who knows maybe he has no money to pay this or anything else. And maybe he’s shock full of convictions already. I guess he felt it was the right thing to do.

You came from a decent and God fearing family, so I am shocked to see your name mixed up in this. Anyway I leave all judging to God Almighty. I will keep prayer in my heart for you, because I know you are better than this.
