Midnight curfew remains

Despite having no reported active cases of the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) in the British Virgin Islands, the midnight curfew has been extended for a further two weeks.

A Cabinet statement issued late Thursday indicated that latest curfew order has been published in the Virgin Islands Gazette – the official newsletter of the government.

“The public is asked to take note that under this Order, the curfew continues in effect until Thursday, August 13, 2020, from midnight to 5 am daily, subject to such conditions as stipulated in this Order,” the statement said.

In the meantime, private vessels are allowed to move in the territorial waters between 5:01 and 7 pm daily except in waters classified as an exclusion zone.

A pre-clearance is needed to move through the exclusion zone outside of the navigational limits from the Multi-Agency Operational command before travelling.

The Order said, “the navigational limits are “East of 64.38300’W on the south side of Tortola and an area East of the dividing line between the westernmost tip of Jost Van Dyke and Westernmost tip of Tortola (This area will be further confined by navigational limits to the North, East and South)”.

Curfew is to prevent COVID-19 spread

According to the document itself, the reason for the curfew is to control, suppress or prevent the spread of the virus in the territory.

Persons are to remain inside their place of residence, including their yard space during curfew hours.

Likewise, business places are to operate between the hours of 5:01 am and 11:59 pm and observe all social distancing and sanitization protocols that have been established by the government.

The British Virgin Islands has been under this current curfew since June 17.

If we have no Covid in the BVI – how does the curfew control prevent or suppress the spread of Covid. Looks like an abuse of power.
Will anybody challenge it in the Courts?
Time to change this Governor – his time in the BVI has been terrible for us and he brings us bad luck – he needs to get back to middle management in the UK Govt and leave us be.

This shows just how powerless the people really are. There are no active cases and no reasons to believe there are any. The vast majority believe and support the lifting of curfew ,which is in place supposable for covid, yet a few men and women continue to keep us locked away and there’s nothing we can do about it.

would these curfews hold up in court? Seems to me if there is no covid then there’s no covid. It will neither spread during the day or at night. Perhaps its a related to a concern over mischief or crime?
